The Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) is seeking a Biorepository Laboratory Technician to join the Clinical Laboratory department. The Laboratory Technician will form part of the Biorepository team and work as part of a dynamic multidisciplinary team in the Clinical Laboratory of AHRI. The incumbent will be required to perform various laboratory-based duties and functions, such as receiving and processing of various biological samples, including PBMC Isolation, from different studies, preparing samples for storage and transport, assemble sample collection kits and assist with general housekeeping and maintenance of the laboratory, equipment and instruments in accordance with health and safety and company policies and procedures as well as GCLP and ISO15189 requirements. The position is based at our Durban Campus but may be required to travel and assist in the Clinical Laboratory based at the Somkhele Campus. Overview of Duties Perform day to day laboratory functions including assembly of sample collection kits, processing, distribution and storage of specimens as well as ad hoc activities as indicated by the line manager or other senior lab manager. Use of Laboratory Information Management system for logging of samples, generating labels, capturing of specimen locations and quality control and management of records and data. Logistical co-ordination of clinical samples. General housekeeping and maintenance of all laboratory and cryogenic equipment and facilities. Compliance with Health and Safety and Company policies and procedures as well as GCLP/ISO15189 requirements. Assist with developing, review and implementation of quality control and assurance procedures. Assist with developing and review of SOPs, documents and workflows. Minimum Qualifications BSc/B Tech degree or equivalent qualification in Human/Medical Laboratory field. Minimum Experience Minimum of 2 years’ experience of working with human biological samples. Experience and knowledge of PBMC and biological specimen processing techniques. Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems. Experience working in ultra-low temperature storage facilities. GCLP or ISO15189 certification will be advantageous. Experience in a clinical research laboratory setting would be advantageous. Valid Driver’s license with a minimum of2 years driving experience. Advantageous BSL2 laboratory experience. IATA certification. Previous vaccination and immunity to Hepatitis B is highly advantageous. A Citizen or SA Resident with current work permit.
