Cuts, grinds, and prepares meat for consumers Listens to customers and answers their questions related to the services provided to them Displays prices, weighs, packages, and displays meats Follows up with rules, regulations and other relevant laws guiding livestock production and sales in the geographical area. Negotiates and confirms orders from customers Offers meaningful advice to customers on how to preserve meats they don't intend using the same day Inspects meats and other related products brought for processing or sales to ensure they are safe for consumption Keeps records, budgets, and inventory of the business Cleans the meat preparation counter to avoid contamination of the meats Educates customers on their choice of meat to satisfy their meat desires Uses butchery tools to cut, grind, tie, and prepare meets for customers Cuts meats and puts them into good arrangement for easy identification and selection by customers Make arrangements for delivery of orders received from customers. Education: A butcher does not necessarily need a formal education to be a top-notch butcher. experience is what is needed alongside good energy levels Associate degree in Food Services or coursework in a reputable culinary institute will do Also, a good degree or diploma in Food Sciences or any related field will be a big boost to chances of being selected for a butcher job Experience: Good number of years of experience is the major factor needed to be hired into any animal or meat producing organization Knowledge: Good knowledge in food safety is vital. Knowledge of animal and food sciences will be highly needed for this job. Applicants should be able to exhibit high level knowledge of food preservation technics, especially in relationship to meat. This should also be combined with some technical skills like the act of cutting, tenderizing, deboning, etc. Skills: Here are the basic butchery skills to consider developing: Excellent oral and written communication skills: The butcher should be able to communicate effectively with customers with utmost clarity. He/she should be able to teach customers on how to prepare and preserve meats in clear and simple terms. Safety consciousness: He/she should be careful enough not to endanger any part of his/her body or that of someone else while doing this job Interest in food related issues, especially meat preparation, deboning, etc. Great attention to detail. This is needed to ensure that what is given to customers is exactly what they demanded or ordered for Multitasking: The butcher should be able to handle many tasks simultaneously with little or no margin for mistakes Hand-eye coordination: He/she should establish a good connection between the eyes and the hand. This is to minimize accidents due to cuts in the process of meet preparation. Efficient strength: He/she should be ready to stand for a long time and execute this job. He/she should have good energy level to keep up with the demands of the job. Excellent personal hygiene: The butcher should be able to keep themselves and the meat preparation counter hygienic and clean to ensure that meats are safe for consumption Customer service skills: This is needed to keep in touch with customers, taking their orders and knowing how they want their orders delivered to them Professionalism: He/she should go about this job with utmost sense of purpose and understanding of the demands of the butchery job. Salary: R6000 - R7500 per month
