The Cancer Data Registrar requires successful operation of the Network Cancer Registry requires credentialed staff (Certified Tumor Registrar - CTR) that is trained and knowledgeable in all aspects of oncology data collection and case abstracting. By using a standardized cancer registry data system, the Cancer Data Registrar has responsibilities for the collection and coding of demographics, cancer identifying elements, definitive treatment, extent of disease, and patients' disease status, from a variety of source documents, for state reporting requirements, National Cancer Database reporting requirements, and accreditation with the American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer. The Cancer Data Registrar is accountable for the efficient operation of the Network Cancer Registry in regards to timeliness, accuracy, and complete data collection, and for ensuring Cancer Conferences are facilitated in compliance with Commission on Cancer Standards. A Cancer Data Registrar relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. The focus of the Registrar's activities is guided by the interests and directives of the Cancer Committee, Cancer Registry Manager, Medical Staff and Administration. Cancer Data Registrars are looked to by healthcare professionals as quality measurement trends develop, to help evaluate and improve patient care. High quality cancer registry data are essential to accurately access treatment outcomes and patient survival. JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Ascertains all reportable cancer cases by reviewing pathology reports, and various hospital records and logs. Determines class of case through review of source documents. Uses medical terminology and human anatomy & physiology knowledge to translate medical information into a standardized coded structure as specified in the Standards for Oncology Registry Entry (STORE) manual. Utilizes the Extent of Disease (EOD) coding instruction manual to code the greatest extent of disease based on combined clinical and operative/pathological assessment in accordance with the site-specific uniform rules as stated in the manual. Utilizes the 2018 Solid Tumor Rules and priority lists to guide the process of determining the number of primaries and to provide coding instructions to ensure site-specific data collection is consistent and stardardized. Utilizes a combination of the most precise clinical and pathological documentation of the extent of disease to categorize and assign a SEER Summary Stage (per the site-specific 2018 SEER Summary Stage Manual) to show how far a cancer has spread from its point of origin. Utilizes AJCC 8th Edition Cancer Staging Manual to categorize the severity of an individual's cancer based on the primary tumor as well as on the extent cancer has spread in the body. AJCC TNM Staging provides a common language for doctors to effectively communicate about a patient's cancer and on the best courses of treatment and is a required field in the Network Cancer Registry Database. Utilizes computer expertise in several different computer systems (METRIQ, EPIC, Varian/Aria) to access information necessary for case completion. Maintains a working knowledge of the METRIQ Cancer Registry Software and Database, and keeps current on all updates. Sends letters and makes phone calls to obtain complete diagnosis and treatment information from physician offices and other outside facilities. Uses written, verbal, and computer-based communication in searching for follow-up status on all cases and make clinical decision on disease status. Electronically submits inclusive data to the Pennsylvania State Cancer Registry (PCR) and the NJ State Cancer Registry (NJSCR) as established by reporting requirements - presently twice a month. Establishes work priorities and effectively balances varying workloads. Assists the Cancer Data Associate with identifying patients and presenters for Cancer Conference; assists with preparation of lists and summaries; assists with the meeting set-up. Maintains the minimum required CE hours for CTR credential and attends cancer-related educational activity annually per CoC standard 11.1. Reviews each record on the annual PCR Reconciliation List to determine reportability and reviews each record on the annual PCR Mortality Listing to identify deceased patients. PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: Sitting for up to 7 hours a day, 3 hours at a time. May require occasional standing and walking for up to 1 hour per day. Extended periods of vision use in reviewing computerized patient records and repetitive arm/finger use in retrieving and abstracting of pertinent information into computerized database. Uses upper extremities to occasionally lift and/or carry up to 25 pounds. May require stooping, bending, and/or reaching above shoulder level. Hearing as it relates to normal conversation. Use of wheeled case to transport AV equipment to and from other Network facilities for meetings. EDUCATION: Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) credential required. Graduate of an accredited Registered Health Information Technology (RHIT) and/or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) program will be considered with commitment to obtain CTR credential within 3 years of date hired. Candidates must meet the education and experience prerequisites in order to sit for the CTR exam. This includes a minimum of an associate's degree with two semesters of coursework in human anatomy, plus 1,950 hours or more of cancer registry work experience. This is a requirement by the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Commission on Cancer (CoC) Standard 5.1 - "Case abstracting must be performed by a Certified Tumor Registrar." TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Knowledge of site-specific tumor biology, staging, and treatment required. In-depth knowledge of human anatomy, medical terminology and statistics required.
