Chief Data Officer - Gauteng

We are looking for an individual with expertise in overseeing the management, governance, and utilization of data within the group to resume responsibility of a Chief Data Officer (CDO) under the guidance of Executive Insurance Administration and ICT, you will be responsible for leading and managing the data strategy and governance initiatives of the organization. The CDO plays a crucial role in driving data-driven strategies, ensuring data quality and integrity, and leveraging data assets and access thereto to achieve business objectives You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and implement data management practices, ensure data quality and security, and establish a data-driven culture throughout the organization. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Data Strategy and Governance: Providing input to the development and execute, after necessary approval, a comprehensive data strategy aligned with the group’s goals and objectives. Establishment of data governance frameworks, policies, and standards to ensure data quality, privacy, security, and compliance. Defining and implementing data management processes, data classification, and data lifecycle management. Cleansing. Reporting to the ICT steering committee on a quarterly basis on the implementation of the groups Data Management Policy and governance structures Data Architecture and Infrastructure: In collaboration with ICT, evaluate and select appropriate data technologies, platforms, and tools to enable efficient data processing, storage, and retrieval. Collaborate with ICT to ensure data infrastructure meets performance, availability, and security requirements. Data Analytics and Insights : Driving the use of business data analytics and insights to derive actionable business intelligence and drive decision-making, exclude those done by Actuarial Department. Developing for approval, and implement advanced analytics capabilities, including predictive analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Collaborating with business stakeholders to identify data-driven opportunities, develop analytical models, and drive data-driven innovation. Data Quality and Data Management: Establishment of data quality standards and processes to ensure accuracy, completeness, and reliability of data. Overseeing of data cleansing, data integration, and data transformation processes to ensure data consistency and integrity. Data Privacy and Security: Ensuring that compliance with data protection regulations (e.g., POPIA) and implement privacy controls and practices. Through regular engagement and reporting to ICT Steering committee ensure compliance with legislation and regulations of the Prudential Authority (PA) Financial Service Conduct Authority (FSCA), POPI Act and ASISA on matters within the department’s ambit. In collaboration with ICT, developing and maintaining a robust data breach response plan to address potential data breaches or security incidents. Data Collaboration and Partnerships: Foster collaboration and partnerships with internal stakeholders to drive data-driven decision making and innovation. Identify opportunities for data sharing, data collaboration, and data monetization with external partners and customers. Building relationships with data vendors, data providers, and external partners to enhance data capabilities and access to external data sources. Data Culture and Change Management: Promote a data-driven culture throughout the organization and educate stakeholders on the value of data-driven decision-making. Provide data literacy training and awareness programs to enhance data literacy and data driven mindset across the organization. Team Leadership and Management: Provide mentorship, guidance, and professional development opportunities to foster a culture of continuous learning. Manage vendor relationships, outsourcing partnerships, and contracts related to data management and analytics. Financial, Budget management and Ad hoc projects: Responsible to prepare annual financial budget (capital and operational) for analytics and data management including data cleansing. Manage actual direct expenses against budget and take corrective actions where there are deviations. Under the guidance of Executive Insurance Administration and ICT lead projects that may come up from time to time due to changing business requirements or changes in the regulatory environment REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS POSITION: Post graduate degree in Data Science, Management Information Systems, Statistics, Analytics or related field. A Ph.D. will be an advantage. Proven experience in a senior data leadership role, driving data strategies and initiatives within a complex organization. 5 years’ experience with a proven track record in data science or services industry. Strong knowledge of data management principles, data governance, data quality, and data privacy regulations.
