Dental Surgical Assistant needed for busy 12 surgeon practice with five locations. Candidate must be flexible and work as a team. Canidate must possess Dental X-Ray Certification or within six months of employment. Responsible for assisting the oral surgeon in the clinical treatment of patients. Responsible for infection control efforts for oral surgery practice as directed by dentist, including ensuring the availability and use of protective wear for all patients and employees; maintaining instruments and equipment; overseeing sterilization and waste management issues. JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/ Entity as well as the proper release of information. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements. Demonstrates/models the Network's Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external). Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process, and Safety. Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, processes and practices. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code. Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated. Checks to ensure that rooms and units are ready, stocked and clean at the beginning of each appointment. Oversees cleanliness of operatory on a continuing basis throughout the day. Help in other areas of the office when necessary (phones, greeting patients, appointments, etc.) . Greet patients when they sign in and monitor arrival time. Develop and maintain patient flow process in the office with Physician. Seat patients and have proper set-up for procedures. Review medical history and record blood pressure and pulse, ascertain that the present. X-ray is current and of good diagnostic quality, shows entire tooth and root and was taken no more than 12 months before visit. At all times show care and concern for patients, ask about position, offer reading material and try not to leave patient unattended in the chair. Be available when the dentist starts treatment. Anticipate and assist dentist's needs at all times. Give patient post-operative instruction, ensure understanding of same, change gauze as required and report to dentist if bleeding is not controlled. Escort patients from the treatment room. Take and develop x-rays. Perform clinical procedures as delegated by the dentist. Monitor patient flow and report to manager. Update patient's health history at each visit. Record information given during anesthesia cases. Perform other tasks as assigned by the dentist. Ensure employees have access to antiseptic hand cleaner and clean paper towels. Ensure availability and use of protective wear for employees: eye protection, facemasks, gloves, gowns and other protective clothing. Instruments and equipment Discard all disposable items for each visit. Assemble soiled instruments and place in sterilization area. Clean treatment room surfaces with disinfectant solution. Pre-soak soiled instruments in a disinfectant. Process instruments in ultrasonic cleaner tank. Rinse and soak treatment trays in disinfectant. Maintain hazardous chemical list. Sort and package instruments by tray for sterilization. Load, activate and vent the sterilization unit according to the manufacturer's directions. Store instruments and trays in appropriate places. Unpack and store all inventory items. Mix required cleaning solutions and keep them fresh. Clean ultrasonic units and autoclaves. Use a spore test once a month for sterilizer. Keep sterilization logs current and file spore test results. Keep sterilization area clean and neat at all times. Keep refrigerator temperature log current, check temperature every morning. Maintain a supply inventory for surgical procedures and infections control. Submit supply orders to business manager once a month or as necessary. Waste Management Discard needles in puncture-resistant, leak-proof, labeled containers. Decontaminate regulate waste and place in leak-proof, puncture-resistant containers. Apply warning labels to regulated waste Maintain drug inventory, logging usage of all medications for daily/monthly audit. Maintain and adhere to policies and manuals on hazardous materials and blood borne pathogens. Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated. Demonstrates/models St. Luke's Physician Group core values and customer service behaviors in interaction with all customers (internal and external). PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: Requires sitting, standing and walking for extended periods of time (up to 8 hours at a time). Continually use fingers for patient care, writing and handling patient charts. Routinely uses upper extremities; occasionally life items up to 25 pounds. Occasionally push cart with supplies up to 30 pounds. Occasionally push wheelchair with a patient weighing up to 325 pounds. Stoop, bend and reach above shoulder lever regularly. Hearing as it relates to normal conversation and taking blood pressure readings. General vision, near vision, peripheral is all required. EDUCATION: High School Diploma; graduate from an ADA-accredited dental assisting program or dental assisting experience of 3 years preferred; coursework in dental instruments and procedures preferred; compliance with state dental practice requirements (x-ray certification (within 6 months of employment), OSHA training) TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Legible handwriting for patient chart documentation; computer experience.
