Department of Environmental Affairs: Deputy Director: Health and safety - South Africa

Deputy Director: Health and safety Requirements: A recognized degree or national diploma in Occupational Health & Safety/Environmental/Risk/Quality or equivalent relevant qualification Extensive relevant experiences in environment, safety and health management. Proven experience and knowledge in either of ISO14001/ ISO9001 / ISO31000 standards. Experience in environment, safety and health management policy development and implementation Knowledge and experience in implementation of OHSA Act. and other relevant legislation Proven strategic management and leadership skills Good communication skills (both verbal and report writing) with experience in stakeholder engagement Experience in programme and project management Experience in financial management and related legislation within the public sector. Duties: Develop, implement, monitor and review environmental safety and health strategies, policies and procedures, risk assessments and safe working practices. Provide accurate and clear interpretation of Health & Safety legislation and codes of practice. Identify potential environmental, health and safety emergencies and specify the applicable response actions in accordance with the relevant standard operation procedure to minimise the impact on the environment and human health and safety. Develop systems to ensure all employees comply with all relevant legal safety requirements. Identify safety training needs, organise and co-ordinate safety training courses and prepare training material where appropriate. Evaluate incident forms, surveys, audits to establish root causes, formulate a plan of action to correct non-compliant behaviour or conditions. Liaise with Islands and Antarctic base station to ensure their compliance with safety regulations and adherence to safety standards, including basic safety induction training. Monitors health, safety and environment performance across all parts of Chief Directorate and as a whole, to understand and manage emerging health, safety and environment system performance issues. Liaises regularly with peers to ensure that they have the support they need or them to meet their health, safety and environment accountabilities. Ensure effective communication and build relationships with key stakeholders. Manage financial resources and ensure availability of adequate and skilled human capital for the directorate.
