The U.S. Consulate in Cape Town is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for a position of Economic Assistant in the Economic Office. The incumbent independently cultivates and maintains contacts at all levels of government and the private sector. Identifies topics for reporting and provides reporting and analysis across the spectrum of economic and political issues; arranges and attends meetings with contacts; arranges and attends high-level meetings; facilitates engagement at the highest levels of U.S. and the host nation. The incumbent provides protocol guidance to Mission Leadership and VIP visitors and supervises the organization of representational events. The incumbent reports to the Economic Officer. Education Bachelor's degree in economics, political science, international relations, international law, or journalism is required. Work Experience Five years of progressively responsible experience in with a government agency or department, South African political party of movement, consultancy firm, think tank, or media company reporting on economic issues is required. Language English - Fluent; speaking/reading/writing, may include the ability to translate Job Knowledge Specialized knowledge of economics and economic issues in South Africa as well as knowledge of the South African political system, formal and informal policymaking process. Knowledge of South African Government protocol guides, general etiquette and social norms of South Africa is required. Skills and Abilities Basic familiarity with MS Word is required. Ability to develop and maintain contacts, prepare and present written and oral reports. Must be able to work accurately with little supervision. The successful candidate must be able to obtain and hold a Local Security Certification or Public Trust clearance.
