An exciting opportunity exists for an Exploration Manager - Africa to be based in Johannesburg working collaboratively with local Country Managers and a virtual team of technical experts from across RTX to deliver discovery by maximising exploration effectiveness and efficiency for multiple jurisdictions/limited commodities, or multiple commodities across limited jurisdictions. Reporting to the Exploration Director you will: Understand and interpret the technical, fiscal, legal, commercial, economic, community and corporate drivers that impact upon creating value through discovery. Manage large and potentially multi-disciplinary teams of managers and/or senior professionals. Operating within a highly diverse and complex environment, the Exploration Manager has a view to sustaining the business over a >3-year timeframe Leading a multidisciplinary technical team, looking at multiple jurisdictions/limited commodities, or multiple commodities in limited jurisdictions through early-stage phases of the exploration process from concept and target generation, through target testing and onward to Project of Merit. Managing commercial, legal and statutory obligations across several regional, state or country jurisdictions. The role ensures that Rio Tinto compliance obligations are met across the entire breadth of the portfolio and all stages of the exploration process. Planning for the long term; creating conditions for future success by building and developing effective teams, securing government and community agreements that will permit and support exploration long into the future and by introducing technologies or practices that will create and sustain competitive advantage. Contributes to the development of functional or departmental strategy. Controls resources and policy formation in area of responsibility. Looks beyond existing methodologies and own discipline to define and resolve complex problems. The role interacts with a range of Rio Tinto PG/BU teams, governments, regional or local communities, research agencies and competitors. Develops a comprehensive stakeholder understanding and builds relationships with key external stakeholders (governments, local communities, civil society) to establish Rio Tinto's reputation as a preferred partner by clearly demonstrating corporate technical ability and commitment to sustainability. What you'll bring Degree tertiary qualification in geoscience or related field Atleast 15 or more years of experience of which 8 years in should be in a senior leadership role Highly developed leadership skills including the ability to build and develop high performing teams across professional, technical and corporate support functions. Significant experience in senior leadership roles in multi-commodity resource environments, including exploration. Strong strategy development skills and ability to align regional exploration goals to global strategy. Demonstrated outstanding ability to generate and execute programs of work in support of strategy through effective resource management, application of exploration techniques and technology, and capture and interpretation of data. Demonstrated ability to develop strong and productive working relationships with a wide range of people including within a cross cultural, multi-language environment.
