General Assembly Unit Manager - Port Elizabeth

We are seeking a skilled and experienced General Assembly Unit Manager to oversee the operations of our General Assembly unit at our automotive vehicle manufacturing plant. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a team to ensure the efficient assembly of vehicles while maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety, and productivity.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Vehicle Assembly Processes: In-depth understanding of vehicle assembly processes, including body shop operations, chassis assembly, trim assembly, and final vehicle assembly.
  • Ability to optimize assembly line layouts, sequence operations, and implement efficient workflows.

Quality Management Systems:

  • Proficiency in implementing and maintaining quality management systems such as ISO 9001
  • Experience with quality control tools and techniques for defect detection, root cause analysis, and corrective/preventive actions.

Automotive Technologies:

  • Knowledge of automotive technologies and components, including engines, transmissions, electrical systems, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
  • Understanding of vehicle architecture and integration of subsystems into the assembly process.

Equipment and Machinery:

  • Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of equipment and machinery used in vehicle assembly, such as robotic arms, welding machines, conveyors, and testing equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment issues and coordinate maintenance activities to minimize downtime.

Lean Manufacturing Principles:

  • Expertise in lean manufacturing principles and methodologies, including 5S, Kaizen, Value Stream Mapping, and Just-in-Time (JIT) production.
  • Proven track record of implementing lean initiatives to improve productivity, reduce waste, and streamline processes.

Supply Chain Management:

  • Understanding of supply chain management concepts and practices, particularly as they relate to inbound logistics, inventory management, and supplier integration.
  • Ability to collaborate with suppliers to ensure timely delivery of components and materials to support production schedules.

Manufacturing Engineering:

  • Knowledge of manufacturing engineering principles, such as process design, capacity planning, and production optimization.
  • Experience in conducting feasibility studies, process simulations, and risk assessments for new assembly projects or process improvements.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Awareness of regulatory requirements and industry standards applicable to vehicle manufacturing, including safety regulations (e.g., OSHA) and environmental regulations.
  • Ability to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory obligations in all aspects of operations.

Data Analysis and Reporting:

  • Proficiency in data analysis tools and techniques for performance monitoring and decision-making.
  • Ability to analyze production data, identify trends, and generate reports to track key performance indicators (KPIs) related to quality, productivity, and efficiency.

Continuous Improvement :

  • Commitment to fostering a culture of continuous improvement within the General Assembly unit.
  • Ability to engage employees in problem-solving activities, encourage innovation, and recognize and reward contributions to process improvement initiatives.
  • Carry out any additional or reasonable duties that may be allocated to you by management.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Manufacturing, Business Administration, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Proven experience in automotive manufacturing operations
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire a team.
  • In-depth knowledge of General Assembly processes and best practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Solid understanding of quality management systems and continuous improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma).
  • Familiarity with safety regulations and protocols in a manufacturing environment.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and manufacturing software systems.
