Job Role The HSSE Intern is a key member of Tetris. Your main responsibility is to ensure a continued process of improvement in the standards of Health, Safety, Security, and the Environment. The HSSE Intern is responsible for assisting with developing, maintaining, and implementing the Health, Safety and Environmental Management System. You will use your skills and knowledge to implement these HSSE systems within the business and make sure that HSSE ideas and ethics are accepted across the entire organisation. You will be expected to provide direction and guidance to the Tetris South Africa Senior Management Team, Tetris employees and sub-contractors on HSSE issues within the workplace, to monitor, advise, support, enforce and report upon standards of Health, Safety, Security, and the Environment and enforce compliance with legal requirements and company policies. You will have direct access to management and report directly to the Tetris HSSE Lead. You are expected to build effective relationships with other HSSE personnel within Tetris and JLL, and to help clients, subcontractors, and partners where appropriate. You will serve as the expert within the field of HSSE, when called upon to address regulatory and voluntary compliance issues within South Africa. Your customers include each person within Tetris. The more you can support them, the more they can in turn support our clients and meet the needs of the business. You are to maintain an uncompromised level of confidentiality and integrity related to all Tetris information and operations in general and lead by example. You should have the ability to adapt to changes in the work environment and remain flexible to business needs. You must be able to work effectively in a multicultural team environment and have good interpersonal and conflict handling skills with the ability to have difficult conversations. The role requires active participation at all levels, from strategy through to implementation, as well as actively influencing and motivating a variety of people to ensure commitment to the overall HSSE management of the business. The HSSE Intern will undertake any other duties the South Africa Managing Director and Tetris EMEA HSSE Lead may reasonably require. Your tasks You are to regularly review management systems to ensure continual compliance with relevant legislation and accreditations such as ISO 14001, and ISO 45001. You will coordinate external HSSE audits by interested parties, and coordinate and conduct internal HSSE audits within your Tetris business unit, ensuring non-conformances are closed out as per agreed timescales. You will help the South Africa HSSE Lead identify employee development and training needs and assist in compiling the annual training budget review to ensure that Tetris South Africa has sufficient and appropriate qualified personnel, as agreed with the Senior Management Team, to conduct our work safely and to support client needs. You are to support all project teams in producing relevant HSSE project documentation including Construction Safety Plans, Environmental Plans and Fire and Emergency Plans and Risk Assessments and Method Statements. Compliance to the OHS Act 85 of 1993 as well as the Construction regulations by implementing and auditing Site Specific files in li with Client specifications is a critical part of the job. The HSSE Intern will also support project teams for minor accidents, incidents and near misses and personally investigate major accidents and incidents to produce relevant reports for interested parties as required. You are to assist the Bid Teams within Tetris , to help them provide relevant and up to date information for Client tender and PQQ requests, to help Tetris win work across South Africa. You will support the Commercial Team by conducting HSSE reviews on subcontractors and suppliers who intend to join our supply chain, offering suppliers improvement advice to meet our requirements. You will help project teams identify, evaluate, record and review environmentally sensitive activities of the project scope of work and ensure assessment is included within project risk assessments. Environmental protection is to be monitored during projects as appropriate. You are to help establish where waste can be avoided prior to project commencement and evaluate the opportunities for re-use of materials where possible. You are to produce national specific HSSE Action Plans and review them regularly with the Management Team, initiating improvement actions to meet targets where appropriate. You are to communicate relevant HSSE information throughout the organisation and promote HSSE awareness of our One Team S.A.F.E.R. Together culture change programme through various communication channels i.e., Tool Box Talks, inductions, training, campaigns, flyers, discussions, emails, etc. in consultation with all relevant departments. You will be expected to conduct low level training and to organise training sessions and courses for business personnel using both internal and external providers. You will be expected to organize and/or conduct trainings to meet Labour Code requirements You are to record HSSE key performance indicators monthly, and issue reports as necessary, including Accident Frequency Reports. You will conduct regular HSSE visits to sites, identifying improvement actions and best practices for subsequent use on other projects. You should naturally develop, implement, and encourage improvement in the behavioural based safety culture throughout the business, through safety observations, inspections, and audits. Fulfil H&S Service according to OHS Act 85 of 1993 and all its regulations Sound like you? To apply you should be/have Mandatory Higher Education Diploma in H&S or Postgraduate Diploma in H&S Experience with Microsoft Office programs and proficiency in Word, Excel, and Power Point - a high level of competency and accuracy in writing and maintaining clear and professional documentation relating to integrated management systems Excellent communication skills - demonstrate leadership, supervision and facilitation skills Ability to work under pressure Desirable An auditor qualification for either ISO 9001, ISO 14001, or ISO 45001. First Aid Certificate. Qualifications in specialist areas such as Fire Safety, Environmental Management, etc. A relevant award in Education and Training. Training in Accident, Incident and Near Miss reporting. Business and Administration training. Customer Service training. Lean Organisation Management or equivalent training. Knowledge and experience of applying for RoSPA and BSC International Safety Awards. Good command of the English language (written/ spoken) is preferred to enable efficient liaison with other HSSE personnel across the Tetris EMEA business. A working knowledge of French, German, Spanish, Italian, Czech, Portuguese or Polish will also be of value.
