Purpose of Role To lead the mandate and strategy of Jakes Gerwel Fellowship (JGF), so as to deliver on its objectives. The CEO has overall accountability for the development and successful implementation of the strategy and sustainability of the Fellowship. The CEO should be an inspiring and motivational leader, and who is well respected in the in the teaching profession/not-for-profit community or who has relevant educational experience within the corporate sector. The CEO should have strong networks in the education sector, not-for-profit and donor communities and is able to bring about sustainability through attracting new funders to its mission and programmes. They should be a person who embraces change, seizes opportunities, and demonstrates agility in their leadership style. The CEO must have excellent business acumen accumulated over many years of experience, with a solid grasp of vision, mission, strategy, organisational growth and scaling expertise, implementation, and impact evaluation. Most importantly, the CEO must display the utmost integrity and the JGF values whilst leading and caring for the expert and dynamic JGF team. Objectives of Role Achieve JGF’s mission and promote the retention and development of teachers in the profession and their impact on schooling, so as to improve learning outcomes at no or low fee schools; Promote collaboration with other entities in the Allan & Gill Gray Philanthropies Group that share the similar vision, mission and values, and contribute to leadership and to the success of the Group; With the Board, formulate the development of JGF’s long-term strategy; Effectively lead the Fellowship through implementation of the strategy and providing guidance and direction to the ExCo team; Appoint, lead and develop an ExCo team such that team members can reach their full potential; Ensure that the culture, diversity and values of JGF are upheld in order to create a healthy, safe and productive and engaged working environment; Direct thought leadership initiatives through influential national and global networks that contribute to the creation of a new generation of education leaders, who will be at the forefront of the addressing pressing challenges and transformation within the South African education sector; Ensure excellent governance and compliance is in place in order for the Fellowship to remain socially and financially sustainable; Ensure that the reputation and credibility of the Fellowship is maintained in order to build trust with all stakeholders and funders; Maintain and build on future partnerships with key institutions such as the Department of Basic Education, the South African Council of Educators, Provincial Education Departments, and the universities that offer relevant education qualifications which would positively impact the effectiveness and sustainability of the Fellowship; Create continuity of focus between the Board and the Development Office/fundraising team to make sure that fundraising efforts are sustained and successful. Experience and Qualifications Identification with the JGF’s vision, mission, and ethos and those of the Group. Relevant Master’s Degree or equivalent, preferably in Management, Education or Charity/Non-Profit Management. 15 years’ experience in a leadership role, of which 5 years has been in a senior leadership and an ExCo role. Minimum 5 – 7 years leading a team of senior managers. 5 years of experience in a non-profit, preferably in education. Experience in growing and scaling an enterprise. Proven record of strategic funder / donor engagements and securing funding. Proven track record of visionary leadership and programme development. Advanced specialised computer literacy Strong people development and talent management Strong financial acumen Group-wide organizational skills Excellent communication skills Working with the Board of Trustees to ensure good governance and stewardship.
