We are seeking a highly capable Mechanical Engineer. The incumbent's responsible for minimizing plant downtime, maximizing the reliability and extend the operating life of plant equipment and machinery by implementing agreed asset care strategies and developing medium and long-term improvement plans for all equipment and machinery. In so doing, submit and manage capital and major maintenance projects, ensure that equipment is properly designed, selected, and installed by a vendor/contractor that is capable and qualified to complete the specific scope of work. Develop, implement, and monitor planned, preventive, and predictive maintenance program's by implementing effective asset care strategies. Reporting to the Engineering & Maintenance Manager. The incumbent must; • Plan, direct and coordinate activities concerned with the design, construction, modification, continued performance and maintenance of equipment and machinery. • Establish standards and policies for installation, modification, quality control, testing, inspection, and maintenance of equipment according to world class engineering principles and safety regulations. • Select and confirm the capability and qualification of engineering vendors/contractors to complete specified and agreed engineering work. KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: • Ensure all plant equipment is operating effectively and efficiently through utilizing planned and predictive maintenance systems. • Ensure optimal mechanical support to production to minimize waste and equipment lifecycle costs. • Do fault finding and root cause analysis on problem equipment and to improve plant efficiency by optimising the available equipment. • Inform plant management of all situations or conditions that could result in downtime and to take all such remedial action as is necessary to minimise downtime as a result thereof. • Prepare detail specifications for repairs to equipment and where equipment needs to be replaced based on a total life-cycle philosophy. This information will be used for procuring services or equipment. • Prepare Capex applications for improvement projects. • When there is a need for capital and/or major maintenance expenditure, it is the responsibility of the plant engineer to ensure that the scope of work is properly specified, and that the vendor/contractor is capable and qualified to complete the agreed work. Added to this, the engineer must ensure all vendors/contractors comply to the Occupational Health and Safety Act No. 85 of 1993, while undertaking any work on any TSG premises. • Where Jumbo Centre enters into a contract of work with a contractor, the plant engineer must satisfy him/herself that the contractor meets the requirements as specified in the “Jumbo Centre Contractors Rules Agreement”. All capex applications must clearly specify the scope of work and the selection criteria that were used to validate the selection of suppliers from the quotes received. • Ensure that the correct type & number of spares are kept in stock to improve Plant availability whilst reducing Working Capital. Review stock (spares) items once per year to identify redundant items. Ensure that all redundant spares items are scrapped without delay. • Manage and Forecast maintenance expenditure relative to budget. • Develop and motivate maintenance & Capex budgets annually. • Ensure employee development and performance gaps are identified, discussed, and corrected to improve overall maintenance staff capability. • Continuously coach, develop and performance manage engineering and maintenance resources. • Ensure equipment and processes are compliant with the OHS Act. • Ensure that all statutory inspections are completed with relevant documentation updated and filed. • Ensure a clean and organised work environment in line with 5S. • Ensuring contractor compliance to all company standards and procedures. • Inform plant management of all situations or conditions that could result in downtime and to take all such remedial action as is necessary to minimise downtime as a result thereof. • Negotiate, in the company's interests, with suppliers of equipment and services. Ensuring that proper specifications are given to such suppliers, and that work done by such is of the required standard. • You will from time to time be required to work outside of normal working hours in support of the production and technical departments. This may entail call out duty or phone call support as appropriate. • Perform other tasks as specified by the Engineering Manager. • Demonstrate the ability to work efficiently in a team and knowledge sharing environment. • Demonstrate good interpersonal skills and a practical approach to solving engineering problems. • Demonstrate a commitment to continued professional development. • Submit a monthly report covering the performance of the asset care program. This should include an analysis of asset management KPI's with corrective action where required, medium and long-term plans to correct known problems and a summary of the financial performance to date and forecast to year end. QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university. • A minimum of 10 years' experience in maintenance and projects in an FMCG manufacturing plant environment. • Training and practical experience in the principles of planned and predictive maintenance and at least three years management experience. • The very nature of this position demands the knowledge and understanding of engineering fundamentals of both the mechanical and electrical disciplines. A very broad-based and sound mechanical engineering background is essential. Since by design, converting equipment and consumables are sourced worldwide, the incumbent must be fully conversant with imperial, metric, American and international measurement systems, standards, and materials of construction. • Experience with heavy and light, high and low speed, rotating and stationary equipment, auxiliary and associated equipment, in order to know their inherent faults and flaws. • Solid understanding of engineering fundamentals of both the mechanical, electrical and Instrumentation disciplines. • Ability to read and develop mechanical, electrical and PID drawings. • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, such as Excel, Word, Projects, Visio, including AutoCAD required. • Sufficient level of expertise in order to develop drawings & specifications for equipment repairs. • Knowledge of all the legal requirements of the OHS Act and BCEA and other legal requirements Negotiable, based on experience Apply Now
