Policy and Stakeholder Manager - Gauteng Position Title Policy and Stakeholder Manager Employment Capacity Full-Time Employee Office Based Johannesburg EE/AA Yes Purpose The Drinks Federation of South Africa (DF-SA) brings together the producers of alcohol, their value chains, trade, and business associations and is predicated upon the belief that these enterprises coincide with the well-being and prosperity of the communities in which they operate. The vision of the DF-SA is: A drinks industry that is valued for the breadth and depth of its contribution to a prosperous, just, and safer South Africa, and for meaningfully contributing to progress in responsible drinking behaviours, both real and perceived. This role will provide a coordinated, integrated, and aligned industry approach to anticipate, analyze, translate, and influence legislative and regulatory development and its resultant impact for the alcohol industry. Main Responsibilities Strategic Leadership Develop, enhance and execute against the strategic vision a multi-year strategy for the DF-SA in terms of regulations, public policy, government affairs and stakeholder relations. Regulatory monitoring Anticipate, analyze, translate, and influence legislative and regulatory development and its resultant impact on the alcohol industry. Monitor key alcohol policy developments and policy shifts at regional, national, and multilateral levels (WHO, UN). Advise how the regulatory trends will impact the industry in the short to long term. Regulatory reporting and communication with industry stakeholders. Regulatory risk management Participate in relevant industry bodies and coalitions to shape and align direction in the policy space. Identify, develop, manage, and retain stakeholder relationships and partnerships in government (national, regional & local), industry, and civil society. Build an effective government and key stakeholder engagement, communication, and lobbying plan. Regulatory strategy development and execution Strategic prioritisation on shaping the external environment. Targeted strategy for specific regulatory challenges, including the economic impact of proposed regulatory or policy changes. Develop policy positions to enhance the vision of the DF-SA. External Stakeholder Management Cultivate and maintain relationships with external stakeholders, including government officials, regulatory agencies, industry associations, and civil society organizations. Collaborate with external stakeholders to promote an understanding of the alcohol industry's contributions and advocate for positive regulatory environments. Represent DF-SA at external events, conferences, and meetings to engage with stakeholders and advance the organization's objectives. Coordinate joint initiatives and partnerships with external stakeholders to address mutual concerns and promote responsible alcohol consumption. Monitor and respond to stakeholder feedback, concerns, and inquiries to ensure transparency and alignment with DF-SA's goals. Identify opportunities for collaboration and coalition-building to amplify the industry's voice and influence regulatory outcomes. Internal Stakeholder Management Internal communication to build consensus and ensure alignment and buy-in from key stakeholders. Chair the DF-SA regulatory forums. Provide regular feedback regarding the forum's progress on key regulatory issues, including updates to the Corporate Affairs Directors. Functional Experience Minimum 7 years experience in the policy and regulatory field with experience in the alcohol, tobacco, or pharmaceutical industry. Experience developing/influencing and successfully advocating public policy positions. Familiarity with all levels of governmental infrastructure and public sector agencies. Experience building relationships/coalitions with a wide range of stakeholders. Proven experience in demonstrating leadership and positive impact on regulatory public policy developments. Ability to research problems and issues, including evaluating new or modified legislation to determine the industry and societal impact. Ability to advise on government legislation, regulatory processes and systems regarding alcohol. Academic Requirements Relevant Bachelor degree, preferably with a Master degree (e.g., Economics, Law, Public Policy, International Relations, Public Management) Core Competencies Independent work ethic. Strategic, action-orientated, self-driven and innovative. Strong critical thinking and strategic ability. Solid verbal and written communication, negotiation, and presentation skills – the ability to communicate complex issues that may have controversial findings.
