NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (MAHIKENG CAMPUS) FACULTY OF NATURAL AND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES SCHOOL OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES POSITION NUMBER: M000712 VACANCY: PRINCIPAL TECHNICIAN PEROMNES GRADE: P9 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT APPOINTMENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION Provide the required technical and managerial support to enable all Animal Science units to function effectively whilst adhering to correct procedures and health and safety guidelines of the North-West University. In addition, be able to perform other assigned functions or duties as directed by the HOD of Animal Science. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Management and production of livestock and aquaculture within acceptable norms, standards, and legislative frameworks (Animal Protection Act, etc.). Management and production of pastures, among others, within acceptable norms and standards Animal monitoring, purchasing and sales, monitoring inventory and consumables to ensure that all units are well stocked and resourced. Assist academic staff members and postgraduate students with their related research activities. Preparation and submission of reports, monitoring, documentation, and administrative duties. Supervision and management of academic technicians in the department of Animal Science. Monitoring of all stock and equipment and timeous stock. replacement as well as equipment maintenance and repair. Lead in the planning, monitoring and evaluation of students on Work Integrated Learning activities. Perform responsibilities as assigned by the SGL of Animal Science Department. An MSc (NQF level 9) in Animal Science or related field. Professional registration with SASAS. Membership with SACNASP. A minimum of three (3) years' livestock management and production experience. ADDED ADVANTAGE A minimum of one (1) year pasture experience. KEY FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES: Manage the teaching of on-farm practical activities, research and community outreach projects. In depth knowledge/expertise in livestock management and production. Understanding of the basic conditions of employment as well animal rights and ethics. Ability to supervise and manage academic technicians to facilitate optimal performance within the teaching (WIL) and research environment. Ability to work with Academics and Researchers. REMUNERATION The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
