Professor Associate Professor Computing Sciences - South Africa

CORE PURPOSE OF JOB
The Department of Computing Sciences (CS) is looking to fill a position of Associate Professor/Professor within the department with an enthusiastic, forward-thinking person who will contribute to the vision and mission of the Department in the role of a leader in the Department. The field of Computing Sciences includes Computer Science and Information Systems. There are three key areas of performance that academic staff members in the department need to meet, namely: 1) learning and teaching; 2) engagement and 3) research generally focused within the Department's research areas (descriptive topics available upon request). The main purpose of this post is therefore to facilitate and administer the learning process for students in modules presented by the Department at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels particularly in the discipline of Computer Science, to supervise Postgraduate students, to mentor junior colleagues in the Department in the three key areas, to conduct research and regularly publish on such research, to contribute to community engagement and to be involved in core organisational functions of the Department, Faculty and University.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
Learning and Teaching
Facilitate learning and teaching for assigned module(s) in accordance with principles of good teaching practice, which includes material development, engaging with students and module administration;
Demonstrate knowledge of and skills in providing effective learning, teaching and assessment opportunities;
Evaluate and reflect on the quality of own teaching and assessment;
Lead in the development and review of new modules/curricula;
Mentor junior colleagues in the principles of good learning, teaching and assessment practices; and
Represent the Department at relevant Faculty and University learning and teaching forums.
Research
Provide research supervision to Postgraduate students, Honours, Masters and Doctoral levels;
Demonstrate knowledge of and skills in providing and leading effective research opportunities;
Manage national and international research projects for the Department;
Independently conduct and lead research in the Department's research areas;
Regularly generate research outputs for publication in the Department's research areas;
Mentor emerging researchers (staff and Postgraduate students) in the conducting of research in the Department's research areas;
Generate and manage third stream income (for example, in the form of research grant applications and awards) for use in independent and Departmental research projects; and
Represent the Department at relevant Faculty and University research forums.
Engagement
Lead in the initiation of Departmental engagement activities, which could include engagement with schools, industry and other external stakeholders; and
Represent the Department at relevant Faculty and University engagement forums.
CORE COMPETENCIES
Knowledge of advanced topics in the field of Computer Science, such as Data Structures, Advanced Programming, Automata Theory, Compiler Theory and Artificial Intelligence.
High-level cognitive thinking skills for setting and marking assessments, and applying theoretical concepts to practical examples in learning and teaching.
Leadership skills for module and programme development within the Computer Science discipline.
Supervise Postgraduate students at Honours, Masters and Doctoral levels to successful conclusion of their qualifications in at least the past 5 years.
Recent and regular accredited research publications in at least the past 5 years.
Manage and lead collaborative team research projects.
Experience in involvement in research funding applications and grants.
Involvement in engagement activities and university organisational management functions.
REQUIREMENTS
Professor
A Doctoral degree in Computer Science
Minimum of 4 years' experience as an Associate Professor, incorporating teaching experience (e.g. lecturing, setting and marking of assessments, curriculum development, postgraduate supervision), conducting and leading research activities and engagement activity involvement in the field of Computer Science. The teaching experience should relate to advanced Computer Science modules such as Data Structures, Advanced Programming, Automata Theory, Compiler Theory and Artificial Intelligence.
Involvement in institutional organisational functions at a management level
Proven credible research and engagement record
Proven research publication record in accredited, high quality journals
Supervised a sustained number of Masters and Doctoral students to successful completion
Record of mentoring new academics and early-career researchers
Conducted collaborative research in international research teams
Have successfully obtained research grants
