Senior Lecturer Lecturer Computing Sciences - South Africa

CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

The Department of Computing Sciences (CS) is looking to fill a position of Senior Lecturer / Lecturer within the department with an enthusiastic, forward-thinking person who will contribute to the vision and mission of the Department in the role of a leader in the Department. The field of Computing Sciences includes Computer Science and Information Systems. There are three key areas of performance that academic staff members in the department need to meet, namely: 1) learning and teaching; 2) engagement and 3) research generally focused within the Departments research areas (descriptive topics available upon request). The main purpose of this post is therefore to facilitate and administer the learning process for students in modules presented by the Department at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels particularly in the discipline of Computer Science, to supervise Postgraduate students, to mentor junior colleagues in the Department in the three key areas, to conduct research and regularly publish on such research, to contribute to community engagement and to be involved in core organizational functions of the Department, Faculty and University.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

Learning and Teaching

  • Facilitate learning and teaching for assigned module(s) in accordance with principles of good teaching practice, which includes material development, engaging with students and module administration;
  • Lead in the development and review of new modules/curricula;
  • Mentor junior colleagues;
  • Represent the Department at relevant Faculty and University learning and teaching forums.

Research

Provide research supervision to Postgraduate students, Honours, Masters and Doctoral levels;

Manage national and international research projects for the Department;

Regularly generate research outputs for publication in the Departments research areas;

Generate and manage third stream income (for example, in the form of research grant applications and awards) for use in independent and Departmental research projects; and

Represent the Department at relevant Faculty and University research forums.

Engagement

Lead in the initiation of Departmental engagement activities, which could include engagement with schools, industry and other external stakeholders; and

Represent the Department at relevant Faculty and University engagement forums.

CORE COMPETENCIES

Senior Lecturer

  • Evidence of academic experience in the field of Computer Science, including setting and marking assessments that require high-level cognitive thinking.
  • The ability to apply theoretical concepts to practical examples in learning and teaching practice.
  • Experience in module and programme development within the Computer Science discipline.
  • Experience in participating in and managing collaborative team research projects.
  • Evidence of the ability to supervise Postgraduate students at Honours and Masters levels to successful conclusion of their qualifications in at least the past 5 years.
  • Evidence of research/conference publications in at least the past 5 years.

Lecturer

  • Related and relevant experience in the field of Computer Science or Information Systems.
  • The ability to apply theoretical concepts to practical examples.
  • Experience in participating in and managing collaborative team projects.
  • Evidence of the ability to supervise Postgraduate students at Honours level.
  • Evidence of the ability to produce research outputs.

REQUIREMENTS

Senior Lecturer

  • A Doctoral degree in Computer Science
  • Minimum of 4 years related or relevant working experience as an acedemic, in the field of Computer Science
  • Experience that confirms the ability to teach senior computer science modules such as Data Structures, Advanced Programming, Automata Theory, Compiler Theory and Artificial Intelligence.
  • Involvement in related management functions.
  • Research publications in accredited journals

Lecturer

  • A Masters degree in Computer Science.
  • Minimum of 2 years relevant or related working experience in the field of Computer Science.
  • Experience that confirms the ability to teach senior computer science modules such as Data Structures, Advanced Programming, Automata Theory, Compiler Theory and Artificial Intelligence.
