Job Advert Summary PURPOSE: To provide technical expertise in the development and application of statutory and non-statutory biodiverity requirements across the company. Ensure responsible environmental practices and the conservation of biodiversity in the business operations of Exxaro. Implement biodoversity strategies that align with our commitment to sustainable mining and renewable energy generation. Work closely with various departments to minimize environmental impacts and maintain compliance with relevant regulations. Minimum Requirements QUALIFICATIONS: BA (Hons) Environmental Management (Essential/Minimum or) BSc (Hons) Ecology, Environment & Conser (Essential/Minimum or) BSc (Hons) Environmental Management (Essential/Minimum or) B Degree (Hons) (Relevant) (Essential/Minimum or) Management Development Programme (Essential/Minimum) Masters of Environmental Management (Recommended/Desirable or) M Degree (Relevant) (Recommended/Desirable) EXPERIENCE: 5-7 years Proven experience in biodiversity assessment and conservation, preferably in the context of mining and renewable energy projects. Familiarity with environmental regulations and permitting processes related to biodiversity. Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret ecological data. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with stakeholders effectively. Project management skills to plan, execute, and oversee biodiversity initiatives. Knowledge of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and other relevant software tools. Essential/Minimum Operational REQUIREMENTS: Psychometric Assessment (Essential/Minimum) Certificate of Fitness (Essential/Minimum) Duties & Responsibilities Biodiversity Stay informed about emerging research and technologies related to biodiversity conservation and recommend innovative solutions for integration into company practices Advise on and promote sustainable practices that reduce environmental impact, such as reclamation, reforestation, and habitat preservation. Compliance, Governance and Assurance Ensure compliance with all relevant environmental laws, regulations, and permits related to biodiversity. Compile and ensure adherence to biodiversity strategies, policies, and standards Identify needs and support line management with regards to biodiversity Stay current with local and international environmental regulations related to biodiversity and ensure that company operations remain in compliance. Customer, Stakeholder and Client Relationship Management Provide training and educational programs to company staff to raise awareness and understanding of biodiversity conservation and its importance in our operations. Engage with local communities, government agencies, NGOs, and other stakeholders to foster positive relationships and gain insights into biodiversity concerns Collaborate with waste disposal vendors to negotiate contracts, ensure compliance with company standards, and optimize cost-effective biodiversity solutions. Pursue exchange and preservation of information within group to facilitate effective knowledge management Liaise with key business representatives to manage and resolve biodiversity issues and/or risks Assess processes against set Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) Provide relevant and specialised support to applicable stakeholders Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with stakeholders to enable optimal functioning of biodiversity. Internal Business Processes Conduct and review comprehensive biodiversity assessments at project sites to identify and document local flora and fauna, ecosystems, and potential impacts. Develop and implement biodiversity mitigation plans and strategies to minimize adverse effects on local ecosystems, including habitat restoration and conservation initiatives Ensure audit process and continuous improvement of all projects and initiatives in discipline Pursue exchange and preservation of information within group to facilitate effective knowledge management Undertake, lead, and enable high quality analysis of data for conservation decision-making Collaborate with project teams to assess the potential environmental impact of mining and renewable energy projects on local biodiversity. Support manager and organisation in all aspects of the discipline Support the development of biodiversity Key Performance Areas (KPA’s) Reporting Establish monitoring programs to track biodiversity changes over time and prepare regular reports on the status of biodiversity conservation efforts. Provide guidance and support during the execution of projects. Maintain accurate records, databases, and documentation related to biodiversity assessments and conservation efforts. Safe and Healthy Work Environment Maintain and ensure a healthy environment, safe operations, and practices, ensuring compliance with all applicable Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) policies and procedures in line with set standards. Ensure legislative compliance as a minimum standard. Encourage a culture that focuses on safety in all operations. Ensure compliance towards internal targets & the drive towards ZeroHarm.
