Phakisa Holdings is currently seeking a SHE Specialist in the Sasolburg area. The position is situated within the Safety, Health, Environment, Risk and Quality (SHERQ) Department and reports directly to the Manager SHE: Environment. The incumbent is a key input in the formulation of environmental tactical objective setting within the business. Business Results Provide specialist input into obtaining and retaining environmental licenses/authorizations (WUL) Provide specialist input, relevant to the specific portfolio, into the SHE Excellence approach. Provide specialist input into identifying environmental risk specific to water, waste, land, and biodiversity. Provide specialist input into environmental assessments, coordinate specialist studies and investigations. Report and advise on portfolio specific risks. Provide portfolio specific services as expected by other Departments Advise on discipline technology and technology selection. Ensure a system is in place to monitor, measure and facilitate legal compliance and risk management. Ensure governance of practices for the disciplines including monitoring and audits Participate in centers of excellence and networks to enable optimum technical solutions. Interface with other disciplines to ensure quality service delivery and benchmarking. Influence business decisions to not violate operating and design limits. Ensure the mitigation of short-term risks due to infrastructure redundancy and functional safety being compromised. Participate in the process of understanding the root cause – own the problem, development of the solution to be handed over to the project team. Task ownership for the communication channels for the environmental function Strategic Direction (aligned with One Sasol SHE Approach) Specialist input and support into reducing companies current environmental footprint. Specialist input and support into pollution management to minimize the negative impact on people and the environment. The support provided may include taking the responsibility for some of the pollution management actions like monitoring, reporting, facilitate communication between different parties etc. Specialist input in responsible resource utilization and the promotion of water and energy efficiency Enabling compliance, transparent disclosure, and engaging stakeholders on our environmental performance Addressing environmental challenges within companies overall sustainability approach to mitigate business risks. Report on SHE performance results to the relevant reporting and governance structures Review SHE results to identify opportunities for improvement. Continuously improve on services, identify improvement opportunities, and implement improvement solutions. Ensure area under control is managed to the benefit of our company and aligned with our partners requirements. Manage multi-level interfaces and integrate effectively. Integrate with relevant internal and external stakeholders. Manage knowledge by transforming, packaging, and maintaining knowledge. Leadership Support the SHE Excellence Approach and provide specialist input to portfolio specific environmental plans. Sustain own high performance and seek opportunities for personal growth monitored through structured performance contract and development plan. Ensure that our companies vision, values and business direction are enhanced. Communicate and execute change and improvement effectively. Stakeholder management Establish and sustain effective relationships with relevant internal and external stakeholders (local, provincial, and national levels) Build and maintain transparent relationships with the service providers and surrounding communities. Participate as member of Environmental forums, natural working teams and other groups. Governance /Charter/ Legal compliance Ensure compliance to portfolio specific legal requirement (license to operate) Assess portfolio specific legal compliance status of all permits, licenses and authorizations and facilitate implementation of corrective actions/recommendations. Translate/identify environmental legislation applicable to the specific portfolio and assist with implementation of relevant controls. Ensure that portfolio specific activities are being conducted in accordance with the SHE Excellence Approach Give specialist input to ensure accreditation/certification of portfolio specific systems. Implement and maintain portfolio specific reporting systems e.g. data, audit results, incidents. Implement and maintain internal and external communication systems. Co-ordinate portfolio specific activities arising from emerging legislation that can potentially impact on our company. Report annually to the relevant governance structures and corporate SHE on the top SHE risks for the purpose of assurance on the effectiveness of SHE risks management. Act within the SHE governance and compliance framework as set out by management. Act upon findings from audits and assessments and take proactive measures to ensure SHE maturity and compliance. Align SHE is meeting agendas with the SHE Excellence approach implementation methodology Report the business SHERQ results to the relevant reporting and governance structures. Group SHE Risk Control/Risk Management Assess portfolio specific legal compliance status of all permits, licenses, and authorizations. Consult on the prevention and addressing of environmental contamination (water, waste, land and biodiversity) due to our company and associated activities. Ensure that environmental protection is considered during plant design. Ensure that studies are supported in the areas that our company operates to understand and mitigate the environment risks. Ensure that documented procedures are in place and are aligned with legal and good practice guidelines to prevent environmental impacts. Ensure that environmental awareness training is provided to the workforce performing tasks that could impact environment and that workforce is declared competent where relevant. Ensure that regular inspections of equipment, facilities, and infrastructure where failure could result in environmental impacts are undertaken. Ensure that monitoring of environmental performance (water and effluent waste) is conducted, recorded, and reported appropriately. Ensure that appropriate containment and drainage is in place and maintained. Specialist input and support into emergency response procedures for environmental contamination are defined and tested regularly during emergency exercises. Continued focus to reduce our companies site-specific environmental footprint in accordance with an agreed site tailored environmental improvement plan. Ensure that water which has been contaminated is assessed remediated following a tiered risk-based approach. Ensure that appropriate equipment is installed to reduce effluent impacts. Ensure monitoring of environmental performance is conducted, recorded, and reported appropriately. Ensure that affected stakeholders are consulted and relevant information shared in a timely and transparent way. Evaluating controls to ensure that residual SHE risks are tolerable. Monitoring and reporting on the effectiveness and adequacy of critical controls Provide specialist input and support in agreed phases of a project to ensure that safe commissioning and suitable operations are achieved before final handover. Provide specialist input and support in the planning and management of the decommissioning or abandonment of assets and the remediation of the resulting SHE risks. Continuous Improvement/Knowledge transfer Strategically influencing direction and keep up to date with technical developments in area. Using expert knowledge, attention to detail and team dynamics to solve complex technical problems. Keep abreast with water, waste, land, and biodiversity related challenges in our company. Generating ideas to solve water and waste problems and exploit opportunities in our company from an environmental perspective to assist us with effective practices. Incorporate the knowledge and experience gained into existing systems. Provide consultation to individuals and project teams on matters in his/her area of expertise. Share expert knowledge in own team and at all other levels (e.g. COP's) Use experience to mentor and coach, especially in the field of expertise. Review SHE results to identify opportunities for improvement. Grade 12 B Degree e.g. BSc (Hons) in environmental management sciences with a minimum of 6 years' relevant total working experience. or MSc Degree with a minimum of 4 years' relevant total working experience in environmental management sciences Computer literate The main purpose within the role is to provide specialist input into water, waste, land, and biodiversity management at our company and to support business by: Identifying and address water related risks, adhere to water legislation and policies, and improve water management practices. Identifying and resolving waste storage risks according to DFFE's Norms and Standards for Waste Storage. Identifying and resolving land and biodiversity risks. Ensuring compliance to the water use license (WUL) requirements and reporting. Offer environmental specialist support to our Durban Operations in terms of land remediation requirements.
