This role will be responsible for the management and oversight of welding engineering department. General Manage and lead a team. Provide mentorship, technical guidance and support to the team members. Foster a collaborative and high-performance work environment. Perform other job-related duties from time to time as assigned by the manager. Mentoring of staff Mentor and interact with staff members at all levels to foster growth and encourage development. Support production and strive for Continual Improvement Collaborate with production teams to optimise welding processes for efficiency and quality. Provide technical guidance and supervision of welding activities performed in the workshop. Troubleshoot welding related issues; determine and document root cause analysis and implement lessons learned in collaboration with the production manager to prevent re-occurrence. Analyse and report on welding repair rates to highlight key constraints and give guidance to the operations team for improvements to reduce the repair rates. Investigate, procure and implement welding project management software to integrate welding and QC management providing full traceability. Define and monitor objectives for improvements to be made within the welding engineering department. Monitor budget and propose CAPEX requirements Monitor PQR and Welder Qualification Costs per workshop and define yearly budgets. Make recommendations regarding new technologies that are relevant to our processes. Procure latest editions of relevant codes and standards and verify that they are within yearly budget. Prepare and submit comprehensive CAPEX proposals for new technologies relevant to our processes as well as QC tools, justifying the investment and outlining anticipated benefits. Assist in obtaining budget quotes for tendering purposes on welding consumables, heat treatment activities and NDT activities. Manage Heat Treatment Contractor, AIA and NDT contractor. Monitor compilation of documentation Evaluate equipment, machinery and materials used for welding activities: Assist with the selection & calculation of the required welding tools & materials as specified in the RFQ. Oversee the preparation of material and consumable purchasing requisitions following the specific requirements of each client and project. Develop and implement welding procedures in accordance with industry standards, customer and project specifications. Oversee the Continuous update of the register for qualified welding procedures and welder performance records. Oversee the preparation of Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) following the specific requirements of each client and project. Ensure that all project welding related documents (WPS, PQR, heat treatment technique sheets, material purchasing specs) are completed efficiently to avoid production delays. Communicate lead times to planning. Identify constraints and training needs within the workplace environment and develop training program. Post Graduate Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Metallurgy. Senior qualification in welding or courses accredited by IIW/EWF or SAIW. 10 years' experience in a similar role in a relevant engineering environment (earth moving and/or pressure vessels) Legal Liability Certification. OHS Act certification. Certification as an International Welding Engineer or Technologist (IWE/IWT) is highly recommended.
