NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (MAHIKENG CAMPUS) FACULTY OF ECONOMIC AND MANAGEMENT SCIENCES SCHOOL OF ECONOMIC SCIENCES POSITION NUMBER: M000083 VACANCY: ASSOCIATE PROF/SENIOR LECTURER PEROMNES: A6/A7 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT APPOINTMENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION An Associate Professor/ Senior Lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the institution, and to carry out activities to maintain and develop his/her professional activities relevant to the profession or discipline. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Effective Teaching and Learning The ability to deliver high-quality instruction, including designing courses, developing teaching materials, engaging students, and assessing learning outcomes. This involves maintaining up-to-date knowledge in the field and employing effective pedagogical techniques. Research Productivity The capacity to conduct original and impactful research, leading to publications in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at conferences, and securing external research funding. This may also involve collaborating with colleagues and supervising graduate students. Management Support Active participation in departmental, institutional, and professional service activities. This includes serving on committees, contributing to curriculum development, mentoring junior staff and students, and engaging with the broader academic community through professional organizations. Professional Development Continual growth and development as a scholar, educator, and academic leader. This involves pursuing opportunities for further education and training, staying current with developments in the field, and seeking out leadership roles within the institution and professional community. Community Engagement Involvement in outreach activities that connect academic expertise with the broader community. This might include public lectures, workshops, consulting work, or collaborations with local organizations to address societal challenges. Collaboration and Collegiality Working effectively with colleagues within the department and across disciplines. This involves fostering a supportive and inclusive academic environment, collaborating on research projects, and contributing to a positive institutional culture. Ethical Conduct Upholding the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and ethical behaviour in all aspects of academic work. This includes adherence to research ethics, maintaining academic honesty in teaching and scholarship, and demonstrating respect for diverse perspectives and identities. A PhD (NQF level 10) in IS or one of the following fields: OO programming, AI, Networks, Cyber security, and Databases. In addition to the above: SENIOR LECTURER A minimum of five (5) years teaching experience. A minimum of two (2) research publications in accredited journals. At least one completed Masters student supervision. ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR A minimum of eight (8) years lecturing experience. A minimum of five (5) research publications in an accredited journal. At least two completed master's students' supervision and one completed PhD student or in process. ADDED ADVANTAGES Membership with Affiliation with any recognized ICT professional board. Conference proceedings. FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (Knowledge and Skills): Research Proficiency Demonstrated ability to conduct high-quality research in the field of Information Systems. This includes expertise in research methodologies, data analysis techniques, and a track record of publications in reputable journals and conferences within the field. Excellence in Teaching and Learning Skill in delivering effective and engaging instruction in Information Systems topics. This involves designing course materials, delivering lectures, facilitating discussions, and assessing student learning outcomes. Proficiency in incorporating cutting-edge technologies and real-world examples into teaching. Subject Matter Expertise In-depth knowledge of key concepts, theories, and emerging trends in Information Systems. This includes understanding topics such as database management, information security, system analysis and design, data analytics, and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and blockchain. Industry Engagement Ability to bridge academia and industry by leveraging professional networks, collaborating with industry partners, and staying informed about industry developments and challenges. This may involve consulting projects, executive education programs, and research collaborations with industry stakeholders. Leadership roles Capacity to contribute to the academic community through leadership roles and service activities. This includes serving on departmental and university committees, mentoring students and junior faculty, organizing academic events and conferences, and contributing to the development of the Information Systems discipline through professional associations and societies. KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES: Communication Skills Effective communication is essential for an associate professor to convey complex ideas and concepts clearly to students, colleagues, and other stakeholders. This includes both verbal and written communication, as well as the ability to adapt communication styles to different audiences. Collaboration and Teamwork The ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and industry partners is crucial for success in academia. This involves being open to diverse perspectives, sharing knowledge and resources, and contributing positively to team dynamics. Adaptability and Innovation Given the rapid pace of technological change in the field of Information Systems, adaptability and innovation are key competencies. Associate professors should be able to adapt to new technologies and methodologies, innovate in their teaching and research approaches, and effectively integrate emerging trends into their work. Problem-Solving Skills Information Systems often involves solving complex problems and addressing real-world challenges. Associate professors should demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, including the ability to analyse problems, identify alternative solutions, and make informed decisions based on evidence and analysis. Ethical and Professional Behaviour Associate professors in Information Systems must adhere to high ethical standards in their teaching, research, and professional interactions. This includes integrity in academic conduct, respect for intellectual property rights, and a commitment to promoting ethical practices in the use of technology and data. REMUNERATION The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
