NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) FACULTY OF LAW POTCHEFSTROOM LAW CLINIC - NORTH-WEST ACCESS TO JUSTICE CLUSTER VACANCY: ATTORNEY POSITION NUMBER: PF02565 APPOINTMENT TYPE: 12 MONTH FIXED-TERM APPOINTMENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION The position is being funded in terms of an agreement entered between the Faculty of Law and Legal Aid South Africa for the provision of legal services to minor children in the North-West Province. The appointment is made for a fixed-term period of 12 months. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES : Community and scientific engagement / social responsiveness Ensure legal services offered by the Law Clinic staff are done on a day-to-day basis and in a professional, speedy and effective manner. Appear in court in complex matters and mediate disputes. Furnish legal advice and opinions to clients, staff and students. Research the law and stay abreast of recent case law affecting legal services. Ensure that matters do not prescribe and that we adhere to the time limits as set out in the regulations. Mentor and supervise the work done by staff and students (including drafting, file administration, diarising, etc.). Receive and attend to client files daily. Draft and monitor, review and assist staff and students with drafting of letters, documents and pleadings. Daily, monthly and annual reporting on activities. Daily file administration of project and client files. Maintain a record of work performance by completing monthly time sheets. Maintain a file register of all files handed to you. Manage telephone calls and convey messages to colleagues. Regular reporting of statistics and activities in an effective and professional manner. Comply with office instructions, prescripts and directives from line managers. Attend all required training. Teaching and learning (undergraduate programmes) Successfully teach practical classes and assess practical assignments for the module IURI 472 (Legal Practice). Successfully teach practical classes, mentored and supervised students working in the Law Clinic and assess practical assignments for the modules IURE 416 and IURE 426 (Law Clinic). Academic leadership, management and administration / university service Served on and attend meetings of the following committees: Law Clinic Management (member) OHS (member) Community Engagement and Professional Development (member) Moot Court (member) Coordinator / project leader of the Child Justice Unit of the Potchefstroom Law Clinic. Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Under health and safety law, each employee has the duty to take care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by the former's actions or omissions at work. Therefore, each employee must co-operate with management, OHS officials and colleagues to help everyone meet their legal requirements, whilst upholding and maintaining general occupational health and safety standards and practices. An LLB (NQF level 8). Registered legal practitioner of the Legal Practice Council. OTHER COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS: Legal language skills Basic research skills Computer literacy in MS Word and Office, as well as email, internet and electronic retrieval of legal sources Good communication skills (verbal and written) Good interpersonal relations The ability to accommodate multiculturalism. Demonstration of language proficiency in order to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU. RECOMMENDATIONS: Post article experience. REMUNERATION The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
