De Beers Careers – De Beers Vacancies - South Africa

De Beers Diamond Jewellers is the quintessential diamond jeweller, giving substance to style, bringing together the diamond’s dualities of science and poetry, melding its rich history and long traditions with contemporary creativity and cutting-edge craftsmanship. The diamond is a sparkling, celebratory symbol of continuity and eternity, of reassurance and hope for the future, and De Beers brings this beautiful symmetry into the light with its classically elegant jewellery. For a century and more, De Beers diamonds had been set, anonymously, into the creations of master jewellers around the world; now the finest natural diamonds, both rough and polished, have a home of their own. Fusing the essential timelessness of the diamond with dynamic, contemporary yet classic designs, we are the leaders in diamond jewellery innovation in both artistry and craftsmanship. De Beers Consolidated Mines (DBCM) is the pioneer of the South African diamond industry and where the De Beers story began. Formed in 1888, in Kimberley, South Africa, today, DBCM is South Africa’s largest rough diamond producer. Through its partnership with Ponahalo Holdings, DBCM reflects a wide range of South African communities including our own employees and retired workers, gender based and disability groups and leading empowerment business people. South Africa’s largest diamond producer Two mining operations, Venetia and Voorspoed, and surface diamond recovery at Kimberley Venetia, South Africa’s largest diamond mine, produces 40% of the country’s annual production Voorspoed, one of South Africa’s newest mines, is an occasional source of large and exotic coloured diamonds We help to manage the Big Hole at Kimberley, a major tourist attraction in the area A total of 1,007,676 hectares under licence De Beers South Africa Mining Locations De Beers Kimberly South Africa The Eureka, the first diamond found in South Africa, was discovered less than 30 miles away and within a few years, the mining town of Kimberley had become the centre of Africa’s first diamond “rush.” The largest rough diamond recovered here was a 93-carat stone that produced a 45 carat gem. Our own full scale mining operations ended here in the last century, however we continue to be active at Kimberley, recovering diamonds and helping to run The Big Hole, a world class tourism facility we developed. Today, more than 100 years after it was first mined, we are still recovering diamonds from Kimberley’s tailings dumps. We expect our diamond recovery operations to continue through 2023. In partnership with the Northern Cape provincial government and the Sol Plaatje municipality, we continue to explore opportunities to improve the region and alleviate poverty through job creation. De Beers Voorspoed South Africa Voorspoed is an open-pit operation, and occasionally produces large and exotic coloured diamonds. It is located about 30km northeast of Kroonstad in the Free State Province. We are currently mining at a depth of 47 approximately meters, over a surface area of 12.5 hectares, and all diamond processing is carried out at our onsite facility. Every employee at Voorspoed has completed secondary school and some have had tertiary education. At least 25% of the technical and mining jobs at Voorspoed are held by women, and 36% of the total mine complement is female. De Beers Venetia South Africa The Venetia deposit consists of 12 kimberlite pipes. Currently we are mining two of the largest in a single, open pit operation. Venetia is located near the 36,000 hectare Venetia Limpopo Nature Reserve, and we are involved in a variety of ecological conservation activities including the relocation of plants and animals affected by our activities. A feasibility study for the proposed R15 billion (US $2.1 Billion) investment to convert the open pit into an underground mine is underway. The project is to be submitted to the DBCM board for consideration in 2012. Open pit operations will run to 2021 and the conversion to underground mining is expected to extend the life of the mine by 25 years to 2046.
