Areas of Responsibility:
Nursery
  • Monitor seedlings for good health and growth.
  • Ensure that planting schedule is up to date to avoid the over maturing of seedlings.
  • Check for pests and or diseases.
Lands Prep
  • All lands must be inspected and signed off before planting starts.
  • The following must be checked:
    • Ridges
    • Planting lines
    • Planting spaces marked.
  • Check that the correct spraying is done for the crop to be planted.
  • Identify lands that are not suitable for planting and report on them.
Planting
  • Inspect each land before planting to ensure that conditions are suitable for planting to start.
  • Ensure that proper crop rotation is done prior to planting.
  • Ensure all planting is done by mechanical planters.
  • Check lands during the planting process to identify possible mistakes and provide training/ guidance if needed.
  • Check and sign off each land after planting have been completed to ensure that all seedling roots are properly covered, and no J-rooting will occur.
Monitoring Growth
  • Constantly monitor the products on the lands and advise on the necessary fertilisers and or chemicals that needs to be applied according to the fertiliser and spray programs provided.
  • All fertilisers to be applied by mechanical fertiliser applicator.
  • Report on all diseases and pests and treat timeously to avoid it from spreading.
  • Ensure that proper care is taken to ensure sufficient drainage and check that underground drainage is open.
  • ALL LANDS should be checked daily, and scouting should form part of the daily routine.
Harvesting
  • Guide the harvesting department as to when and how much should be harvested when and where.
  • Ensure that no products over-mature in the lands and that all are harvested in good time.
  • Attend morning production meetings and advise on growth of products accordingly.

Specific Duties:
  1. Be responsible for all aspects of care for the land and the growing and harvesting crops
including: effective rotations, composting, fertility building, weed control, pest and disease
management and mechanisation.
  1. Work from and develop the cropping plan and sowing/planting schedule, (alongside the other growers) so as the share is as varied and has as even a quantity of produce as possible
throughout the year.
  1. Work within the standards of Global GAP and attend annual inspections.
  2. Work within the business plan approved by management and in particular work within the
growers budget and seek consensus with management concerning purchases.
  1. All fertiliser and chemical purchases and stock takes to be done by the 1st of every month.
  2. Carry out other work such as infrastructural work and general maintenance work as required by the farm.
  3. Be partly responsible for taking on and managing all aspects of casual/permanent staff including recruiting casual labour where necessary.
  4. Liaise effectively with co-workers regarding the weekly work schedule and help arrange and
attend regular growers meetings.
  1. Attend production and or management meetings, and report on progress, setbacks, and concerns as well as seek approval for any significant changes in working practices and accommodate suggestions from management at General Meetings when these are feasible and practical.
  2. Photos of each land to be taken once a week and to be submitted to senior management in to monitor progress.
Performance Goals:
  1. Ensure 98% strike rate with customer orders.
  2. Ensuring a 90% strike rate with customers growing programs on leaf
    1. 60% strike rate Summer
    2. 80% strike rate winter on brassicas
  3. Ensuring a minimum of 65% yield for all products for the year.
  4. Cutting down on overtime for all lands staff
  5. Working within the financial budget with fertiliser and chemicals
  6. Sowing / planting strictly according to the planting program unless changed by senior management.
  7. Every possible mechanism at your disposal must be used to ensure the following: (you will be thoroughly evaluated on each of these on a regular basis)
    1. Correct land preparation,
    2. Planting density,
    3. Germination,
    4. Weed control,
    5. Pests control,
    6. Disease control,
    7. Harvesting practices.
  8. Improving irrigation practices which results in eliminating clear patches in the lands, avoid over or under irrigation and damming of water.
  9. Farm cleanliness
  10. Working hand in hand with all other departments to ensure that satisfying our customers is always our number 1 priority.
