In delivering ‘social science that makes a difference’, the Research Programmes of the Human Sciences Research Council initiate and undertake policy-oriented research projects and programmes from its offices in Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Pretoria. Its public-purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008. The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) is a statutory council dedicated to conducting human and social science research, thus contributing to the pool of global knowledge, and thereby improving the quality of life of people on the African continent, particularly South Africans. The HSRC promotes and undertakes public interest research. This research aims to advance South Africa and Africa’s understanding of and engagement with its social conditions and the particular contexts within which these social conditions occur. The Developmental, Capable and Ethical State (DCES) research programme actively enhances the contribution of the HSRC as a strategic partner in knowledge production and a resource for informing and deepening public debate, national dialogue and theoretical discourse on key national, regional, and international issues and dominant trends related to democracy; development; justice; governance and service delivery. DCES’ objective is to create relevant knowledge that strengthens our democratic society, its institutions, and practices of governance in order to promote social justice. The Developmental, Capable and Ethical State (DCES) research programme of the Human Sciences Research Council requires the services of a Freelance Research Editor to provide high quality editorial services for their research reports for the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA), South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC). Job Title: Copy Editor Location: Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa Reference : DCES-EDT 06/2021 Contract Type: Contract 18 Months Salary: Market Related Job Summary: The service provider will be appointed to undertake both language and technical edits to the final client research reports – six SASAS project client reports. Each of the reports consists of approximately 200 pages. Only applicants that have an academic qualification in English and a proven track record of undertaking both language (English) and technical editing of reports will be considered for appointment. The person will work in close collaboration with the Principal Investigators (PI’s) to proofread and edit the research reports (which includes a bibliography, tables, figures & graphs). Key Responsibilities: The scope of work and expectations of the editor will include the following: a. Copy edits and proof-read the report to ensure editorial quality; b. Editorial services will include but is not limited to: • Content editing and checking – citations, figures, tables, and graphs. • Language editing – assess reports for linguistic quality (checking for grammar, syntax and consistent use of terminology and style) • Technical editing – formatting ensures consistency with font, size, page number, table of content etc. and • Proof reading – checking for typos, spelling, and formatting errors. c. Liaise with PI’s to address any editorial amendments. d. The editor should be experienced in editing technical content involving research findings e. Special attention should be paid to the text to ensure that the information within the report is clearly communicated. f. The reports should be edited in terms of text cohesion, style and layout, language and referencing. Requirements: Key requirements: a. The candidate must have experience in academic writing and in editing academic research reports, minimum of 5 yrs. experience in proof reading, editing large scientific research reports and an academic qualification – BA Degree in any of the following – English, Communications, Journalism. b. Must have experience in similar editorial work and should have excellent English writing skills. c. Reports to be edited will be provided electronically and should be delivered in the same manner to HSRC. d. The documents should be in MSWord and edited using track changes (a marked copy, with all corrections and comments showing, and a revised copy that has the corrections accepted and comments removed) e. The service provider should show the ability to deliver within the agreed-upon timeframes.
