Instructional Designer - South Africa

The Instructional Designer provides faculty with course design support in creating effective and engaging learning environments informed by desired learning outcomes. The role involves consulting with faculty from diverse disciplines to identify course goals and applicable evidence-based instructional strategies. An area of focus will be the integration of innovative online and technology-enhanced course components to enhance learning across different delivery modes. As a member of the Academic Team, the Instructional Designer will also provide pedagogical training to faculty through workshops, webinars, video tutorials, etc. regarding topics related to online teaching, the LMS, course design, and integration of instructional technology. The responsibility of Instructional Designers is to analyze and fix disconnections between learning performance and available tools. As the education system integrates more and more technology and social media tools, they help to make the transition to more interactive programs. They use learning principles to develop the appearance, organization, and functionality of learning systems and materials. Duties and Responsibilities Create engaging learning activities and compelling course content that enhances retention and transfer Work with subject matter experts and identify target audience’s training needs State instructional end goals and create content that matches them Visualize instructional graphics, the user interface and the finished product Conduct instructional research and analysis on learners and contexts Apply tested instructional design theories, practice and methods Provide exercises and activities that enhance the learning process Create supporting material/media (audio, video, simulations, role plays, games etc) Decide on the criteria used to judge learner’s performance and develop assessment instruments Maintain project documentation and course folders Define and document learning objectives. Conduct research and collaborate with subject experts. Create instructional material: courses, curriculum, student guides or training manuals. Design content to optimize learning. Generate the layout of the learning supports. Redesign content to ensure it matches the learner’s needs. Create visual, audio and interactive learning tools. Provides instructional design support to faculty through consultation with individuals and collaborative course design teams. Assists faculty in the development of course materials for delivery of face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses. Assists faculty with conversion of face-to-face courses to hybrid and online formats. Collaborates, assists, develops and participates in facilitation of professional development workshops and symposia, particularly with regard to course design, online teaching, and technology-enhanced instruction. Experience, Qualifications and Competencies Qualifications: · B degree or an Honour’s degree in Education, specialising in Instructional/ Curriculum Design Experience: · Proven working experience in instructional design and with instructional technology · Excellent knowledge of learning theories and instructional design models · Lesson and curriculum planning skills · Basic HTML, Flash and Articulate360 programming knowledge · Solid knowledge of course development software and at least one Learning Management System · Visual design skills (Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator) and ability to storyboard · Ability to write effective copy, instructional text, audio scripts/video scripts Competencies Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work with diverse members of the CTU community including students, faculty, staff, administrators, and external accreditors. Demonstrated ability for effective organizational skills and ability to connect to the institutional strategy while displaying attention to detail. Advanced verbal and written communication skills. Knowledge of CTU’s Teaching and Learning systems, definitions, and procedures. Project leadership and supervisory skills, and the ability to motivate staff productivity and performance. Ability to analyze complex problems, interpret operational needs, and develop integrated, creative solutions.
