An established manufacturer in the Metal Industries, based in the East Rand is looking for a permanent Laboratory Technician to support various divisions within the company with regards to mechanical / metallurgical testing of product prior to dispatch to the customer and also support the QA Metallurgist with certain aspects of customer complaint investigation and specific product development activities. Ensures that all test machine verification checks are performed as specified in the relevant procedures, with the relevant charts being kept up to date. Reports to the QA metallurgist, in a timeous manner any damaged, non-calibrated or equipment where the calibration will soon expire. Maintain a register of incoming samples from the rolling mill, including re-sampling requests. Perform mechanical and metallurgical testing including but not limited to tensile testing, resistivity testing, bend testing. Preparation of samples for testing. Preparation of micro specimen and limited examination thereof. Monthly stocktake of all metallurgical consumables. Assessment against the product specifications on the job card for compliance / non-compliance. Requests re-samples and/or additional samples for works cards as and when required and also follow up on such requests. Change the grips on the tensile tester and for manipulation of heavy copper samples. Ensures that testing records are kept in such a way that traceability is assured. Maintain good housekeeping and cleaning of work areas. This includes proper and timeous disposal of test samples and preparation scrap material. Any other reasonable request related to the function of the QA department Education and Experience The incumbent must have matric (Physical Science, Mathematics, English: All subjects C-symbol minimum, higher grade). Ndip in Physical Metallurgy would be highly advantageous. Other graduate qualifications (e.g. Mechanical) would be considered dependent upon relevant experience. A minimum of one year's experience in a relevant work environment is required i.e. QA, Testing Lab, Metallurgical, Copper / Steel / Aluminium industry etc. Experience of sample preparation on machinery such as lathes will be advantageous. Health & Safety Requirements Houskeeping: Maintain good housekeeping and cleaning of work areas. Compliance: Understand and comply with health and safety policies e.g. wearing of PPE, hearing protection etc. Medical: Attend periodic fitness for work assessments (generally yearly) at the company's Medical Centre. Physical Requirements The requirement is to be able to lift (and hold) 30kg to waist height and the tensile grip (15kg) to head height (& secure pin while holding) on a daily basis.
