PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: The NWU School of Music (Potchefstroom Campus) seeks to appoint one new academic staff member to assume teaching, research, and community engagement responsibilities. JOB DESCRIPTION KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Teaching and LearningTeach practical contemporary commercial music (CCM) singing modules that primarily include the genres of musical theatre, pop, and jazz. Musically direct the CCM vocal ensemble. Teach CCM voice pedagogy and other areas of interest. Collaborate and build effective relationships for successful model delivery. Research Supervision Provide supervision at the undergraduate, honours and masters level. Research Entity Research in any area of the discipline. Contribute to the vision and mission of the MASARA research entity. Administrative Duties Perform administrative tasks, including serving on committees. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: A Masters (NQF Level 9) in Contemporary Commercial Music/Jazz/Musical Theatre. A minimum of 1 year experience in lecturing and research in Contemporary Commercial Music (singing) including either pop, jazz, or musical theatre on a higher education level. Research (including creative outputs) experience on a higher education level. Evidence of significant professional performing experience in CCM singing including either pop, jazz, or musical theatre. ADDED ADVANTAGES: A minimum of 3 years' experience in lecturing and research in Contemporary Commercial Music (singing) including either pop, jazz, or musical theatre on a higher education level. KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES: Professional knowledge of contemporary commercial music singing techniques, theories, teaching strategies, and research methodologies. A knowledge of the repertoire, style and performance practice of CCM including pop, jazz, and musical theatre. The ability to diagnose and remedy vocal faults among CCM singers. The ability to recruit and retain excellent students. Demonstrate basic skills in some of the following practical areas: piano accompaniment, movement, choreography. Competencies in musical stage production. Additional duties maybe assigned commensurate with the candidate's expertise The ability to teach stagecraft to CCM singers (recommendation). The ability to musically/dramatically direct and stage a musical. (recommendation) KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES: Excellent interpersonal skills. The ability to develop teaching-learning and research-innovation of the NWU value chain. The ability to present own accurate and assertive research on a variety of public platforms (conferences and publications). Demonstrate the ability to supervise postgraduate research.
