NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (MAHIKENG CAMPUS) DIVISION: DVC RESEARCH AND INNOVATION DEPARTMENT: LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SERVICES VACANCY: LIBRARIAN: RESEARCH AND SCHOLARLY COMMUNICATION POSITION NUMBER: N000665 PEROMNES: P9 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT APPOINTMENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION The purpose of this position is to provide an expert research support service to postgraduate students and researchers; to develop a data management program; to liaise with relevant role players regarding scholarly communication, research output and the institutional repository; to provide research specific training; to develop a program for young researchers; to manage the research commons as dedicated space conducive for research. This position will also be responsible for the technical assistance/design and development of research information services including RDM and Digital Humanities. To play a significant/valuable role identifying and presenting special collections. Moreover, this position will provide a general and subject-specific information service to library users, including in-depth assistance to postgraduate students, researchers, and academic staff; and, to identify and recommend relevant information sources for acquisition in collaboration with academic staff to support research, and research-based teaching and learning. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Research support to postgraduates and researchers: The provision of an expert research support service to postgraduates and researchers. Assistance with the use of research software (eg. SPSS, ALTAS.ti). Assistance in the use of bibliographic management software (EndNote) and the NWU Referencing Styles. Pro-active development of web pages relating to all library research support. Manage, train and assist with the creation of in-house databases (Exam papers and other special databases on DBText). Ensure that researchers gain maximum benefit from the library's resources and research services. Promote the use of bibliographic management software. Participate and contribute to Open Access initiatives of the University. Advance e-research initiatives and promote the digital scholarship services to the researchers. Market and promote research and open scholarship services web presence through multiple platforms, such as webpages, Libguides, social media, internal communication, etc. Market and support researchers on the research tools and relevant databases. Assist researchers to create and update Researcher/Author profiles. Research Data Management: Assistance in the development of a RDM policy, guidelines and procedures. Assessment and monitoring of researcher needs - analyse information requirements relating to research data management by academics and researchers. Pro-active development of expertise in research data management issues across disciplines- this area involve working directly with researchers and librarians to educate about the importance of data management and sharing, as well as offering hands on support for researchers across the data lifecycle in collaboration with Faculty librarians. Advising researchers on how to meet data management and open data requirements. Assist with completing RDM plans. Raise awareness of the need and options of RDM, articulate the benefits of research data management by marketing data service offerings, organise workshops and create instructional activities (eg ORCIDs). Involved in the planning and organizing of Open Access Week initiatives and promote ORCiD implementation. Assist Faculty Librarians with the roll out and ensure the proper use of ORCID's. Identify data standards and formats, and metadata standards in collaboration with all role players. Peer-review and approve research data on DaYta Ya Rona Empower researchers to convert and upload data, including the use of DaYta Ya Rona's functionalities. Communication of research output: Co-ordination and marketing of a program to include research output in the Institutional Repository. Liaison with Information Systems and Faculty librarians to develop a policy and procedure regarding submission of research output in Boloka. Advocacy for the expansion and use of the Institutional Research and Data Repositories and related Open Educational Resource platforms. Establish collaboration and communication with the Research Office and Research Directors. Quarterly reports to the Research Office regarding NWU research impact by making use of InCites/Scival. Provide information on impact, bibliometrics, altmetrics and as well as citation analysis works which meets the research objectives of NWU. Assist with drawing h-indexes for NRF ratings from Google Citations, Web of Science and Scopus. Create awareness and knowledge about the challenges and benefits of Open Access - promote data sharing and reuse. Consult and advise on scholarly publishing agreements, and retention of the right to deposit materials in the institutional repositories. This includeTransformative Agreements and Open Access Institutional Agreements with publishers. Research specific training: Provision of EndNote training to postgraduate users on demand and as planned. Maintenance of EndNote NWU Referencing Style Guide. Provision of research specific training (h-index etc.). Provision of data literacy training to librarians and researchers (eg. data and library carpentry workshops). Promote and contribute to the development of a data literacy programme and its integration into relevant academic programmes. Analyse user data and information training needs. Development of a program for young researchers: Identification of courses to develop research skills, suitable for young researchers. Identification of suitable trainers to provide additional training in research skills and software (eg. ATLAS.ti). Co-ordination of a program and date schedule on the training web page. Management of Research & Honours Commons: The maintenance of a code of conduct for users of the postgraduate commons. Support and supervision of student assistants working in the Research Commons. Co-ordination of room bookings in the commons by making use of LibCal. Co-ordination of communication with users of the postgraduate commons regarding training opportunities and news by making use of the electronic screen, marketing material and WebPage. Access control and the handling of specific requests for access to the postgraduate commons. Regular communication regarding maintenance in the postgraduate commons regarding the facility, furniture, technology and software programs. A B.Bibl., B.Inf. or a B.- degree (NQF level 7) plus a postgraduate qualification in Library and Information Science or Information Science. A professional membership with LIASA. A minimum of three (3) years' advanced experience in information service and research support to academic users on different levels. A minimum of three (3) years' experience in different sections of an academic library. ADDED ADVANTAGE: A postgraduate qualification in library or information science or appropriate subject area. KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES: Knowledge of and insight into research practices and workflow as well as scholarly communication - demonstrated experience in the planning, implementation and reporting of information, research or data management projects or services - report writing. Knowledge and understanding of data management across the research life cycle. Knowledge of and demonstrated experience in the application and advantages of bibliometric tools - bibliometrics and altmetrics theory and practice. Knowledge of bibliographic management tools (EndNote) and the NWU Referencing styles. Knowledge of information technology trends, open access publishing platforms, standards such as institutional repositories, encoding standards (eg. XML) and metadata. The ability to function independently and liaise with postgraduate students, researchers and other role players. High level of computer literacy with sound knowledge of MS Office, Groupwise and web technology. The ability to provide formal training. Insight into the research needs of postgraduates. Strong inclination towards client services. Research and analytical skills. Comprehension of the broader context of the academic research environment. Knowledge of Copyright Law and Creative Commons licences. KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES: Good communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build relationships across a range of professional and disciplinary areas. Time management. Good judgement and creative approach to solving problems. REMUNERATION The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
