NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) DIVISION: DVC RESEARCH AND INNOVATION DEPARTMENT: NWU LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SERVICE POSITION NUMBER: N001045 POSITION: LIBRARIAN - CATALOGUING PEROMNES GRADE: P9 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT APPOINTMENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: The post of Librarian: Cataloguing is responsible for the effective and efficient creation of metadata (bibliographic records), enhancing seamless access to acquired information resources and thus providing information such as creator names, titles and subject terms that describe resources. Enhance the discoverability of both print and digital library resources to library users (students, researchers, lecturers and staff members). The cataloguer is responsible for the original and copy cataloguing in accordance with professional international standards. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Cataloguing : Cataloguing of information resources according to international standards. Adding library holdings to WorldCat to support the interlibrary loan service. 2. Classification : Classification of information resources according to international standards. Provide subject headings and translate into Afrikaans where necessary. 3. Access points and authority records: Formulation of different types of access points according to international standards. Verify if authority records are in the library catalogue and if not, add the new authority from WorldCat. Continuous updating of existing authority records. 4. Liaison and reporting: Liaison with departmental head and fellow cataloguers. Reporting on work outputs to departmental- and division head. 5. Diverse tasks: Attending of meetings, related workshops and conferences. Ad hoc tasks as determined by the division head. A Bachelor of Library Science or Bachelor of Information Science degree or a bachelor's degree in any field of study with a postgraduate qualification in Library and Information Science. Membership with the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA). 3 years relevant library experience in cataloguing and classification EXPERIENCE A minimum of 3 years' experience in Cataloguing experience on level 2 (AACR2 and RDA). A minimum of 3 years' experience in allocation of subject headings according to LCSH. A minimum of 3 years' Classification experience according to DDC23. KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES: In-depth knowledge of Resources Description Access (RDA) and Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2) for the bibliographic description of information resources and solving cataloguing problems. Indexing of the content of information resources by assigning subject headings according to the Library of Congress Subject Headings List (LCSH). Classification of information resources according to Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) Knowledge of electronic bibliographic tools. Computer skills and knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and the Internet. BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES: Ability to work independently and with little guidance. Accuracy. Good interpersonal skills and ability to function in a team. Proficiency in English. Ability to work under pressure. Knowledge of the cataloguing module of a library system. REMUNERATION: The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
