It’s mission is to empower individuals, organisations, and communities to become passionate, involved and committed custodians of Africa’s seas through an Africa-wide network empowered by research, education, economic upliftment, and collaboration. The organisation is looking for a dynamic individual to lead its community upliftment and enterprise development programmes. This individual will be responsible for managing the implementation of the organisation’s community-based projects and for overseeing the day-to-day operations of their department. This includes managing staff and ensuring that all projects are completed on time and within budget. KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS The organisation’s vision of success is a future where the people of Africa and her seas flourish together. To remain relevant within the African context, the organisation seeks to understand how to best align with national and regional goals of economic and enterprise development across Africa, and use its unique position, value proposition and skillset to contribute to meaningful socio-economic transformation. Not only does the Community Upliftment and Enterprise Development impact portfolio aim to identify and support emerging and existing SMMEs, but it also seeks to identify and understand the design principles that can lead to broader pro-environmental behaviour and impact within pilot communities. Then, through the articulation and documentation of these principles, this impact portfolio further aims to design context-appropriate programmes that can be implemented and replicated at scale across Africa. This position is answerable to the Head of Marine and Coastal Impact Programmes. Key Deliverables include but are not limited to:Develop and execute a clear Recycling Enterprise Development and Economic Opportunities strategy for the organisation, including: a clear value proposition, an implementation plan, a detailed stakeholder engagement strategy, an enterprise development programme, and a robust yet agile M&E framework. In close collaboration with the other impact portfolios, define and map a representative network of appropriate SMMEs, including position on value chain, identified training needs, business challenges, marketing requirements, etc., with a strongly articulated strategy for the organisation’s role in supporting these SMMEs. As aligned with organisational priorities and stakeholder engagement strategies, roll out necessary training and skills transfer interventions within identified priority coastal communities to engage and support the following target audiences: Municipalities / local authorities Informal recycling sector Formal business sector School teachers and learners Communities and consumers Manage the finances of every aspect of the Community Upliftment and Enterprise Development Impact Portfolio, including preparing budgets and financial reporting, managing the training budget and monitoring monthly expenditure reports. SKILLS/ KNOWLEDGE/ EXPERIENCE At least an honours degree in economics or business management, or a similar field. At least seven (7) years’ relevant experience in the waste management and recycling sector as related to enterprise development, at least 3 of these in a management position. Experience in project management, personnel management, economic and business research, and stakeholder engagement essential. Demonstrated understanding of the principles of economics of recycling. Experience working with local government an advantage. Experience working in more than one African country in a related field an advantage. Multiple languages an advantage. Excellent computer skills, including the Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel). Competent writing, editing, and proofreading skills. Excellent organisational, time-management and problem-solving skills. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with stakeholders, including staff, board members, external partners, and donors. Valid driver’s license essential. Must be comfortable driving alone. THE IDEAL CANDIDATE Prioritises effective written and verbal communication in all situations. Displays strong presentation skills and excellent time-management abilities. Is adept with a variety of multimedia training platforms and methods. Has the ability to evaluate and research training options and alternatives. Has the ability to design and implement effective training and development programmes. Understands the use and need for different digital platforms to support education and capacity development activities. Can live and work closely with a diverse team of individuals in a highly intense and fluid work. Displays a strong commitment to teamwork and accountability. Thrives in evolving and changing environments. Is eligible to work in South Africa. Must be a SA Citizen with clean criminal history. Location: Remote working or office-basedDuration: Full-time 12-month fixed-term contract with the potential to renew for an additional 3 years.Commencement date: As soon as possible.Salary: Competitive, market related.
