Introduction The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) is a major global player in infectious disease intelligence. The NICD is a source of knowledge and expertise in regionally relevant communicable diseases to the South African Government, SADC countries, and the African continent. The NICD assists in the planning of policies and programs and supports appropriate responses to communicable disease problems and issues. Description Main purpose of the job: A position exists for a Medical Scientist in the Antibody Immunity Research Unit (AIRU), based at the NICD to perform HIV and SARS-CoV-2 vaccine-related research immunity studies as per grant-funded objectives Location: NICD, Sandringham, Johannesburg Key performance areas: Mammalian cell culture (sterile technique, maintaining and cryopreservation of cell lines) Performing and analyzing functional cell-based assays such as neutralization assays Required minimum education and training: MSc Degree in Microbiology, Virology, Immunology or a related discipline Required minimum work experience: 2 years of previous laboratory experience, and competence in key performance areas Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities: Good verbal and written communication skills Evidence of publications in the field of HIV and SARS-CoV-2 would be desirable Computer literacy (particularly MS Word and Excel, PowerPoint, and GraphPad) would be favorable Analytical and problem-solving ability with enthusiasm for basic immunology Exceptional self-management, conscientious work ethic as well as above average attention to detail Time and project management skills are essential Ability to work closely in a collaborative environment Motivated, organized, systematic and professional Should be able to work under pressure with efficient multitasking Must be willing to work after hours occasionally, as needed TO APPLY: Only if you do meet the minimum job requirements and experience as mentioned above, may you submit a detailed updated CV.
