This position requires the incumbent to work on surface and underground Qualifications: Degree in Occupational Hygiene or related. Registration with the South African Institute of Occupational Hygiene [SAIOH] on Occupational Hygienist level and Chamber of Mines [CoM] Intermediate Certificate in Mine Environmental Control [MEC]. CoM Advance Certificate in Mine Environmental Control Occupational Hygiene Legal Knowledge Certificate – Advantageous At least 5 years post qualification experience in the field of occupational hygiene At least 5 years in a mining and process environment Must have own transport and a valid driver’s licence. Good general health AND requires a certificate of fitness (red ticket). Duties: 1. Promote the health and safety of employees at the mine. 2. Participation in the hazard identification and risk assessment as contemplated in Section 11 of the Mine Health and Safety Act No. 29 of 1996 as amended, including coordinating applicable investigations in accordance with Section 11.5. Liaise with the occupational medical practitioner and OHNP (occupational health nursing practitioner), to link as far as reasonably practical the employees’ medical surveillance results with the occupational hygiene measurement results. Provide employees with any information, instruction, training or supervision that is necessary to enable them to perform their work safely and without risk to health. Report any contravention applicable to MHSA no 29 of 1996 (as amended), Regulations, codes of practice, instructions, permissions, exemptions, etc. 6. Develop a working knowledge of all the relevant codes of practice, best practice documents, guidance notes, mine standards, company procedures, managerial instructions and any special rules made in the interest of health and safety. 7. Make practical recommendations that are specific to each mine for improvement and rectification. 8. Endeavour to ensure that the minimum standards of work as set out in the various codes of practice, mine standards, managerial instructions and company procedures are fulfilled and monitored through the reporting structure to the section manager and/or employer. 9. Develop and assist with implementation of relevant mandatory codes of practice in accordance with Section 9 of the Mine Health and Safety Act no. 29 of 1996 (as amended). 10. Provide information with regards to employees’ exposure to occupational health hazards to be included in an employee’s record of hazardous work as required by Section 14 of the Mine Health and Safety Act no. 29 of 1996 (as amended). 11. Report to the Employer representative as stated in the MHSA no 29 of 1996 (as amended) and regulations specifically but not limited to: 11.1 Chapter 5 ➢ Regulation 5.1(b)- Report to employer on the adequacy of measures in place to prevent, detect and combat the start and spread of mine fires. 11.2 Chapter 9 ➢ Regulation 9-2(1)- Occupational exposure to health hazards. ➢ Regulation 9-2(2)- System of occupational hygiene measurements. ➢ Regulation 9-2(3)- Reporting to employer on occupational hygiene matters. ➢ Regulation 9-2(4)- Provision of potable and palatable water.
