We want YOU We’re looking for an experienced and dynamic PHP Engineer to join our thriving tour operator business, specifically our Development Team. As the PHP Engineer for our tour operator business, you will be at the forefront of shaping our travel offerings through the entire product lifecycle including the design, development, deployment and maintenance of new and existing features, and be responsible for developing and maintaining functional and stable web applications . Your ability to development and maintain PHP Systems with the long term goal of being able to work autonomously and without supervision on systems such as Central, ED, OctoberCMS, and take accountability for their work across the entire SDLC will directly impact our passion for technology to make a difference in South Africa Your multifaceted expertise in technical proficiency, code excellence, collaboration and communication; and maintenance and continuous improvement, ensures a holistic approach to driving business success. Your contributions across these key performance areas and reporting requirements will be vital in achieving our organisational goals and further establishing our tour operator business as a leader in the industry. Description As a PHP Engineer , your responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to: Develop and maintain cutting edge web-based PHP applications Write clean, well-designed code following industry best practices Refactor, optimise and improve the existing codebase for performance, maintainability, and scale adhering to internal best-practices and standards Collaborate with Product Management and other stakeholders within Engineering (Frontend, UX, etc.) to maintain a high bar for quality in a fast-paced, iterative environment Troubleshoot, test and maintain web applications and related services to ensure performance and functionality with timely resolution of of bugs and errors Solve complex performance problems and architectural challenges Perform code/peer reviews for other members in the team Create and maintain documentation throughout the development process Contribute to all phases of the development lifecycle Advocate for improvements to product quality, security, and performance. Actively share information with the team, recognise impediments to our efficiency as a team, and propose and implement solutions Keep up to date with new trends and best practices in web development Requirements National Senior Certificate (Matric) Be based in Cape Town 3 Years working experience as a PHP Software Developer Proficient in PHP, HTML5, JavaScript Experience with PHP MVC frameworks like Symfony/Laravel Knowledge of object-oriented PHP programming Excellent relational database skills with MySQL Good working knowledge of Git Excellent knowledge and understanding of API development and accompanying processes Experience with building RESTful JSON web services Excellent verbal and written communication skills Strong analytical, problem-solving skills and willingness to roll up one’s sleeves to get the job done Demonstrated capacity to clearly and concisely communicate about complex technical, architectural, and/or organisational problems and propose thorough iterative solutions Experience with performance and optimization problems and a demonstrated ability to both diagnose and apply preventative measures Positive and solution-oriented mindset Experience owning a project from concept to production, including proposal, discussion, and execution Self-motivated and self-managing Not essential but advantageous Certificate or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a similar relevant field Experience with Symfony/Laravel-based CMS like OctoberCMS Good understanding of Docker & container-orchestration technologies like Docker Swarm or K8s. ECS/EKS orchestration beneficial Experience with the core services of the AWS ecosystem, such as IAM, Security Groups, VPC, EC2, RDS, S3, Cloudfront, etc. Experience with Unix/ Linux Based server environments and command line Great understanding of Apache and/or NGINX Benefits At Rhino Africa, there’s a smorgasbord of added delights.
