Job Description -Purpose of the role: To support the Head of Tax – Africa & Australia in partnering with businesses in South Africa (as well as other businesses in various African jurisdictions) from a tax perspective and supporting their tax advisory needs. Also, to support the Anglo Group, in such a way as to meet the statutory requirements while being consistent with the Anglo business strategy. Furthermore, to support the Head of Tax – Africa & Australia in delivery of his responsibility as regards the management of the Anglo American’s response to changing multilateral environment for tax, in particular as it relates to the development of tax policy on tax transparency, the tax risk and control environment and tax strategy generally. The Regional Tax Manager will serve three primary functions: The Country Tax Lead, the Country Risk Lead and Country Policy Lead (for the relevant African jurisdictions). Key Responsibilities: Governance/ Advisory/ Risk/ Policy Country Tax Lead: Support the Head of Tax -Africa & Australia in the implementation of the Board approved tax strategy and the management of the Group’s tax affairs for all managed companies in Africa (incl. Anglo Platinum and Kumba Iron Ore). Oversee all aspects of tax operations in Africa, incl. coordinating efforts of other Group Tax Teams. Support the development of and management of relationships with key personnel within Group Tax and the Business Units and ensure they understand and apply Group policies. Contribute towards maintenance and enhancement of relationships with tax authority personnel in relevant territories. Liaise with outside advisors (incl. auditors, legal, investment bankers and other advisors) to ensure proper and efficient tax planning, business partnering and solutions. Train operational staff on pertinent tax matters Assist with the review and updating of tax systems, procedures, and policies. Provision of advice on day-to-day tax matters in the relevant territories, including transfer pricing. Provide tax advice on transactions, including M&A (acquisitions and disposals) and transfer pricing. Assist with adherence to transfer pricing policies and procedures and to ensure compliance with local transfer pricing regulations including master file, local file, and country-by-country obligations. Work with the Operational Excellence team in the management of all tax audits, disputes, and tax litigation within the region. Set direction for managing the tax aspects of reporting, including statutory reporting. Set direction for managing the tax compliance for the group, including developing and maintaining relationships with tax authorities. Assist with managing of external advisers engaged to undertake compliance obligations for Anglo American, where applicable, and assist and advise internal stakeholders as required. Country Risk Lead Evaluate, assess and manage the in-country tax risk in line with the Ango Tax Risk Management Policy Raise awareness of issues within the group in and effectively communicate tax issues to management. End-to-end management of all uncertain tax positions. Country Policy Lead Develop and maintain a tax policy framework in line with the Anglo guidelines. Manage the analysis of changes to regimes as the result of significant multilateral policy changes on Global basis and advice on the implication for the Group. Monitor and communicate legislative changes and practice to the wider tax team and business as appropriate. People / Leadership: Demonstrate behaviour in line with the Group’s values, standards and a professional workplace. Provide leadership to, and develop the performance of, your team in line with the Group’s policies and systems (e.g. performance management, talent management) in order to achieve business goals. As part of this: Develop a clear and aligned work plan for your team. Foster a constructive and productive working environment. Monitor the work of each team member and provide regular and useful feedback to them on how they are performing and Drive delivery of objectives including holding team members to account for their work. Participate as an effective team member in working collaboratively with your leader, peers and relevant others (including from other teams) to achieve business goals. Monitor the activities of your team which involve other teams and appropriately intervene to address any cross-team issues. Contribute to the broader business by working with others in such a way that it optimises the overall business results, rather than just your team’s. Experience: Minimum 10 – 15 years experience with 5 years in a Leadership/Managerial position. An understanding of the mining industry would be an advantage. A proven track record of having worked in a similar role in the Tax field in Commerce, with a Big 4 Accounting firm or a Law firm is required. Experience interacting with Executives is essential. Driver’s License is essential.
