Job Description: The UJ Faculty of Art Design and Architecture (FADA) seeks an accomplished academic and professional art therapist to join us as the Senior Lecturer and Art Therapy Programme leader. This is an exceptional opportunity to lead, innovate, and inspire the next generation of art therapists. Reporting to the Head of Department of Visual Art, the Division Leader will have operational and strategic oversight of the Art Therapy programme and will contribute actively to the strategic plan of the Faculty and the University in terms of teaching and learning, curriculum development, research, internationalisation, and community engagement. Responsibilities: Drive the strategic development and growth of the Art Therapy programme. Provide visionary leadership to staff, fostering a collaborative and innovative academic environment. Deliver high-quality lectures, seminars, and workshops at the senior lecturer level, engaging students in the theory, research, and practice of art therapy. Mentor and support staff in their teaching endeavours, ensuring excellence in curriculum Implement strategies to ensure the program remains at the forefront of art therapy education. Foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment, promoting student success and professional development. Implement initiatives to enhance student engagement, experiential learning, and industry connections. Develop the home and international markets for and outreach of the programme Develop and maintain external contacts, networks, and professional linkages. Work closely with colleagues to coordinate course scheduling, ensuring a cohesive and effective curriculum delivery. Support the development and implementation of curriculum enhancements to meet evolving industry needs. Oversee day-to-day administrative operations, including managing budgets, coordinating events, and supporting staff in their teaching responsibilities. Collaborate with other academic administrators to streamline processes and improve overall efficiency. Undertake research and/or creative work that enhances the discipline and leads to accredited outputs Overseeing the editorial board and publishing of the South African Journal of Arts Therapies. A doctoral degree in art therapy or cognate field; or an equivalent professional qualification and significant relevant professional experience at a senior level. Proven leadership experience in an academic setting. A strong record of teaching, research, and community engagement. Excellent communication and mentoring skills. Registration with the HPCSA. Competencies and Behavioral Attributes: Excellent written and oral communication skills. Strong leadership, organizational, interpersonal skills. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated ability to work with faculty, staff, students, and community members as well as organizational leaders. Proven experience in creating campus and community partnerships. Collegial and emotionally intelligent. Innovative, proactive, and creative. Ability to work in a pressurised environment and independently. High level of integrity and ethical foundation. Research track record of national significance. Relevant digital skills and an understanding of use of virtual learning environment Management experience of development of action plans and budget control. Understanding and knowledge of the relationship between arts practice and arts therapies and professional experience in clinical practice. Experience of having worked internationally and locally with a variety of client groups. Recommendations: Leadership and vision for the role of Art Therapy for social impact. Understanding and furthering of Art Therapy in 4IR and SDGs (online and community impact). The Art Therapy programme leader will be expected to maintain and develop professional, research, commercial and academic contacts to the benefit of the programme. Knowledge of university policies, rules, and regulations. An NRF rating or ability to achieve one would be a recommendation. Registration with the HPSCA for clinical and research supervision. A record of research and/or creative work that could in time lead to NRF rating. 3-5 years' experience in multiple programme coordination. 5 years of lecturing in Higher Education environment.
