NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (MAHIKENG CAMPUS) FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES SCHOOL OF APPLIED HEALTH SCIENCES VACANCY: SENIOR LECTURER POSITION NUMBER: P000406 PEROMNES: A7 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT APPOINTMENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION The Senior Lecturer in Physiology will make significant contributions to the teaching area of the undergraduate at the Mahikeng Campus. The staff member will teach Physiology theory and practice to both Sport Sciences and Nursing students. The Senior Lecturer in Physiology should have experience of effective lecturing in the broader field of Physiology with an interest and basic knowledge in research: Basic research leadership in physiology and/or teaching-learning research. Personal development and student guidance. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Teaching-Learning including postgraduate supervision: Obtaining knowledge, skills and competencies in physiology and effective teaching-learning practices in broader field of Physiology. Obtaining skills to design, develop, evaluate and improve study guides and curricula as the need arises. Lecturing and demonstrating practical skills in Physiology. Conduct assessments (formal, informal, practical) on undergraduate as well as postgraduate level and give feedback to students. On postgraduate level student guidance and supervision will be expected. Participation in teaching-learning development processes within the University boundaries. Developing and maintaining basic strategic and productive partnerships, connections and relationships with people, groups and organisations at local, national and international levels. Communicating appropriately and effectively with students, other staff, and individuals internal and external to the University; and Any ad-hoc assignments given by line manager (school director), within the scope of practice. Research and innovation activity: Purposefully develop own focused research expertise in physiology research relevant to the future medical campus at NWU and participate in research teams as leader and scholar. Framing research problems and researchable questions in the suitable field of interest. Designing and conducting research projects, writing research reports and preparing applications for research funds. Communicating research outcomes to experts through publishing in refereed journals, scientific conferences, and to relevant lay audiences if possible. Contributing to the development and maintenance of a positive academic environment that is conducive to high levels of engagement and standards of achievement in research. Provide service to the University by contributing to the definition and achievement of its goals and enable it to be a healthy organisation. Developing and maintaining strategic and productive partnerships, connections and relationships with people, groups and organisations at local, national and international levels. Leadership, management, service to the University: Contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive academic environment that is conducive to high levels of engagement and standards of achievement in teaching – learning. Provide service to the University by contributing to the definition and achievement of its goals and enable it to be a healthy organisation. This includes being a member of faculty and subject group committees and working parties within the University. Relates to administrative or representative responsibilities in, or on behalf of, the NWU. This normally include delegated administrative, marketing or planning work successfully undertaken in the University, relevant faculty, school or discipline, capacity building, mentoring, administrative or representative responsibilities discharged elsewhere in the University, including leadership or participation in academic or professional organisations, including relevant contributions to the wider community; and/or public representations on behalf of the University in an official or professional capacity, enhancement of the image of the University with inter alia prospective students, employers of graduates, professional bodies and the community. Social responsiveness: Maintaining involvement in community service as a scholarly practice through which physiological knowledge and skills are applied to consequential problems of cardiovascular diseases in South Africa and the world beyond the University. Communicating appropriately and effectively with students, other staff, and individuals internal and external (community) to the University. Embraces engaged scholarship involving academic staff, civic professional engagement involving staff using their professional expertise. Execute activities by which discipline-based skills and knowledge are made relevant to the community. A PhD (NQF level 10) in Human Physiology. A minimum of two (2) years' experience with the relevant active involvement and participation in teaching and learning including the following aspects: evaluative reflective narrative on teaching statements describing teaching philosophy, strategies and goals (ca. 1000 words); effective participation in teaching; design and implementation of learning environments (face-to-face and blended); use of LMS/online platforms, teaching-learning technologies; effective assessment practices; reflection on student feedback (quantitative and qualitative); reflection and peer evaluation on depth of subject knowledge; satisfactory student success rate (throughput); conference and workshop attendance in the relevant discipline and teaching and learning – Portfolio of Evidence or CV. A minimum of one (1) year participation experience in research activities and involvement with the research component of honours and master's programmes may serve as a recommendation. A minimum of two (2) years' demonstrated involvement experience in the school and faculty committees, contributions to advising students and recruitment activities. A high level of professional and ethical conduct supported by a letter from any recent employer or referee – one (1) letter. ADDED ADVANTAGE Membership with the Physiology Society of South Africa, Southern Africa Hypertension Society, and SAAHE (Southern African Association of Health Educationalists). A minimum of one (1) year experience in the publication of conference proceedings and/or papers may serve as a recommendation. Two (2) instances of Social responsiveness: Participation (as leader of the activities) in the following is recommended but is not set as a minimum requirement: Involvement in the broader community, e.g. through media comment, community education, etc.; awards/prizes/grants that acknowledge service at any level; and academic citizenship such as participation to the benefit of a specific community. KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES: Clear evidence of strength in teaching and learning and research and innovation activity. Knowledge and practical skills in the field of Physiology with an interest in Cardiovascular and / or Neurophysiology will serve as a recommendation. Good problem-solving skills with regard to the key performance areas. Computer literacy in Windows MS Office, use of e-mail and internet as well as a program for statistical analysis of data. Demonstrated high standard of interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment. Demonstrated ability of language skills to function optimally within the multi-lingual environment of the NWU. KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES: Have excellent people skills and conflict resolution. Can apply time management and work independently (on their own and without supervision). Must be able to work well in a group. Demonstration of initiative and leadership in some activities should be evident. The ability to maintain effective and constructive interpersonal relationships, as well as to motivate and persuade others to be effective, efficient, achieve agreed goals timely, behave harmoniously and become or remain interdependent. A clear vision, effective, clear and timely two-way communication, a strong results and people orientation, instilling trust, driving diversity, transformation and ethics and managing conflict proactively. REMUNERATION The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
