Manager - Underwriting
Main Purpose of the Job
We are seeking a skilled and experienced Manager to oversee underwriting, reinsurance, policy administration, and portfolio management of our non-life insurance business. This role is crucial in driving the achievement of our organization's financial objectives and ensuring the delivery of high-quality services.
Key Performance Areas
- Underwriting and Policy Administration
- Make authoritative decisions on technical underwriting and business enhancement solutions to improve performance.
- Develop and maintain underwriting guidelines aligned with the business's risk appetite.
- Create processes to ensure business underwriting meets set standards and rates.
- Review and update policy cover, wording, general terms, and conditions.
- Monitor profitability, analyze claim trends, and assess historical account information.
- Determine renewal terms and provide complete renewal packages to the Sales department.
- Ensure adherence to organizational policies, maintain the underwriting risk policy, and manage the underwriting team.
- Reinsurance
- Structure reinsurance programs for all business lines, prepare annual renewal packs, and oversee reinsurance optimization.
- Maintain accurate reinsurance data, approve facultative reinsurance placements, and foster strong relationships with reinsurance partners.
- Portfolio Management
- Manage the underwriting performance of outsourced and binder mandates, initiate corrective actions, and provide integrated long-term solutions for portfolio management.
- Report on binder holder performance, provide reliable information for decision-making, and ensure compliance with all policies and procedures.
- Product Development
- Develop and implement a product development framework, monitor existing products for gaps, and present new development initiatives for approval.
- Departmental and People Management
Performance Management
- Analyze business plans, set deliverables and targets, conduct performance planning, and reviews, and take corrective actions where necessary.
Capacity Planning
- Determine and secure human resource requirements, achieve employment equity targets, and minimize staff turnover.
Financial Management
- Develop and manage the budget, ensure proper control over expenditure, and manage the division's financial health.
Preferred Minimum Education and Experience
- Honours BCom in Accounting, Finance, Business Management, Risk Management, or Insurance.
- 8-10 years of life and/or short-term insurance underwriting experience.
- 8-10 years of experience with insurance operating systems.
