Tax Specialist - Durban

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the company's tax compliance, tax planning, and tax risk management. This role involves ensuring that the company adheres to all tax regulations and laws, optimizes tax efficiency, and mitigates risks associated with tax matters. This role is pivotal in maintaining the financial health of the company and ensuring that our tax practices align with our business objectives.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field (Honours or Higher Degree preferred).
  • Minimum of 5 years proven working experience as a Tax Specialist (Manufacturing sector preferred).
  • Professional tax qualification (e.g., Chartered Accountant (CA), Chartered Tax Advisor (CTA) (preferred).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Tax Compliance:

  • Ensure timely and accurate filing of all tax returns (e.g., corporate income tax, VAT, etc.).
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of South African tax laws and regulations.
  • Prepare and submit statutory tax reports to the South African Revenue Service (SARS).
  • Timely and accurate filing of tax returns.
  • All tax returns (e.g., corporate income tax, VAT,) are filed accurately and on time.
  • No penalties or fines due to late or incorrect filings.
  • Up-to-date and accurate tax records maintained.

2. Tax Planning and Strategy:

  • Develop and implement tax planning strategies to optimize the company's tax position.
  • Provide advice on tax implications of various business transactions and projects.
  • Conduct research and analysis on tax issues and potential impacts on the business.
  • Successful implementation of tax planning strategies.
  • Effective tax planning strategies that minimize tax liabilities.
  • Tax-efficient business decisions and transactions.
    Regular reports on tax-saving opportunities and strategies implemented.

3. Tax Risk Management:

  • Identify and mitigate tax risks.
  • Ensure proper documentation and maintenance of tax records.
  • Conduct regular tax audits and coordinate with external auditors during tax audits.
  • Effective management of tax risks.
  • Identification and mitigation of tax risks.
  • Comprehensive and organized tax documentation.
  • No significant tax-related issues identified during external audits.

4. Advisory and Support:

  • Advise senior management on tax-related issues and potential impacts on business decisions.
  • Support the finance team in tax-related aspects of financial reporting and budgeting.
  • Train and educate staff on tax matters and compliance requirements.
  • Informed decision-making by senior management on tax matters.
  • Improved understanding of tax compliance and planning among staff.
  • Seamless integration of tax considerations into financial reporting and budgeting.

5. Liaison and Communication:

  • Prepare detailed audit reports outlining findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Present audit results to senior management and the audit committee.
  • Facilitate communication between management and external auditors.
  • Maintain open communication with management and the audit committee.
  • Obtain feedback from internal and external stakeholders to enhance effectiveness of processes
  • Strong, positive relationships with tax authorities and advisors.
  • Prompt and accurate responses to tax inquiries and audits.
  • Clear and consistent communication of tax policies within the organization.

6. Compliance:

  • Developing and implementing compliance policies and procedures.
  • Regular training for staff on compliance requirements.
  • Conducting internal audits to ensure adherence to laws and regulations.
  • Compliance with all relevant tax laws and regulations.
  • Policies aligned with regulatory requirements.
  • High levels of staff awareness and adherence to compliance.
  • Successful internal audits with minimal compliance issues.

SKILLS:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) (New Entrant).
  • Computer literacy - Advanced computer skills (MS Office, accounting software, and SAP (Basic/ Elementary).
  • Data Handling - Ability to manipulate large amounts of data and compile detailed reports (Intermediate/ Working Knowledge).
  • Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of South African tax laws and regulations (Advanced/ In-depth Knowledge).
