Wine Buyer - Stellenbosch

Job title: Wine Buyer

Our client, based in Stellenbosch, is looking to hire an experienced Wine Buyer to join their team as soon as possible.

Overall Job Description:

Accountable for overseeing the comprehensive procurement of wine and grapes in alignment with sales forecasts. Responsible or effectively handling all contracts pertaining to inventory and agreed-upon terms. Additionally, they are entrusted with the management and upkeep of long-term agreements and diverse projects associated with production. Maintaining favourable relationships within the wine industry, particularly with crucial suppliers, is a key aspect of this role.

  1. Sourcing of Wine & Grapes
  • Assess the market situation and develop strategies to achieve sourcing goals.
  • Negotiate balanced packages, considering product, volume, price, delivery and payment terms.
  • Allocation of tanks for each vintage based on the agreed wine contracts and quality expectations.
  • Allocation of wine to all bottle and bulk SKUs for the weekly wine planning.
  • Ensure that all products get meet client expectation including wine specification and quality prior to trucking in to the company.
  • Ensure that stock gets managed according to the agreement and size of package.
  1. Evaluation / Pricing
  • Establishes and maintains appropriate methods / systems for evaluating and pricing for wines.
  • Manage pricing within agreed costings or target price band.
  • Ensure payment terms align with company standards.
  1. Managing of Agreements and Projects
  • Manage long-term agreements with regards to production.
  • Responsible for the implementation of new agreements and projects relating to external wine and grape production.
  • Responsible for new vine plantings and expansion initiatives.
  1. Client Relationship / Marketing
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with clients and suppliers through regular interactions.
  • Support sales and marketing activities, including tastings, shows and travelling.
  1. Administration
  • Ensure completion of SAWIS documentation including BG6s, pink cards, and other wine intake-related documentation, as well as WS-application prior to harvest.
  • Ensure that SAGE is well implemented in terms of wine contracts (volume, correct codes, pricing and managed according to company expectations.
  • Set up, maintain detailed recordkeeping of harvest tonnage reconciliations.
  • Set up, maintain, and monitoring off-site stock takes.
  • Regularly update the Buying Plan with volumes per producer, pricing, and average costings.
  • Assist Commercial Finance Manager with wine, service, and additions costings.
  • Maintain proper recordkeeping of all wine and grape contracts.
  • Develop protocols for external processing cellars and farmers regarding external wine processing, additions and grape farming and communicate them effectively.
  • Approve all wine and grape-related invoices, including processing costs and storage fees.
  • Arrange and set up annual allocation tastings, summarise information & provide feedback to cellars.
  1. Quality Management Systems
  • Ensure that all sourced grapes and wine meet legal specifications and comply with South African regulations.
  • Assist during internal audits at (traceability, walkthroughs, auditor queries).
  • Assist during external audits at selected farms / cellars (traceability, preparation, walkthroughs, auditor queries, solutions of problems areas and strategies to improve.
  1. Health, Safety & Housekeeping
  • Adherence to company and statutory requirements & compliance.
  • Ensures housekeeping is kept in order and meets required standards as well as general maintenance.

Requirements:

  • 8 years of production experience in Wine Industry
  • SAGE Experience
  • Minimum 2 years’ cellar operating experience in similar environment
  • Valid drivers license
  • Relevant Degree or Diploma in Wine Making
  • Qualified wine judge on the Wine & Spirits Board
  • Excellent wine making process knowledge. Good people management and relationship skills. Leadership and staff motivational skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Must show initiative, be target driven and self-motivated.

Starting date: As soon as possible

Location: Stellenbosch/Klapmuts area.

Position type: Full time permanent position.

Salary offered: Market related and depending on experience.
