Group IFRS Technical Manager - Randburg

Reports to: Senior Manager: Group Finance

Key Performance Objectives/Tasks
Statutory reporting
  • Providing technical accounting guidance to MCG subsidiaries and associate (where required), in particular assisting with complex M&A and non-systematic transactions. This includes the preparation of accounting position papers that are cleared by the business as well as the auditors, as well as assist with determining the appropriate corporate or subsidiary accounting;
  • Evaluate the impact of new IFRS standards or JSE listing requirements and prepare templates and guidance for the segments in order to gather the required info for AFS and Hyperion Financial Management (HFM) disclosure purposes;
  • Creating and maintaining internal accounting policies, the groups accounting manual and the internal accounting control environment, based on best practice;
  • Preparation of the statutory reporting requirements for the half-year and year-end to shareholders as well as internal reporting, including the annual financial statements, condensed/summary financial statements, and investor relations information, amongst others;
  • Preparation of and presenting of internal IFRS training to the wider group;
  • Setting up the reporting timetable and ensuring it is adhered to not only internally but with the auditors as well. Communicating exceptions and taking a proactive approach to resolving issues;
  • Communicate regularly with the subsidiaries as to the exact requirements for reporting, including ad hoc requests;
  • Assist with auditor and subsidiary queries during interim review or year-end audit;
  • Stay abreast of IFRS, JSE and other reporting developments and pro-actively expand and deepen your practical understanding of the application of these requirements;
  • Ensure enough knowledge transfer and development time is spent on developing team members within the MCG group finance team;
  • Prepare reports for the groups audit committee, including but not limited to JSE proactive monitoring reports.
Accounting systems
  • Engage and collaborate with the Group Systems Manager;
  • Ensure the accounting impact of new IFRS standards or JSE listing requirements are reflected properly in HFM.
Month End Processing and Reporting
  • Support with the preparation of month end results flash;
  • Support with month end deliverables and processes;
  • Support with the preparation of month end presentations;
  • Support corporate entity month-end processes;
Board Reporting
  • Prepare/compile quarterly board reports and presentations;
  • Prepare/compile the quarterly progress reports for the board;
  • Attend board dry runs.
Half-year and Annual reporting
  • Prepare, roll-forward and maintain financial statements for MCG, MCG corporate entities for interim and year-end;
  • Ensure financials comply with reporting requirements (IFRS, JSE etc.);
  • Assist with the preparation of the half-year and year-end packs (where required);
  • Provide information necessary for audit purposes and attend to auditors requests;
  • Attend to all audit technical comments and handle all engagements with external audit technical departments;
  • Assist with the preparation of reports necessary for external reporting, e.g., Integrated Annual Report, press announcements, and trading statements.
Other
  • Maintain good working relations with CFOs, Heads of Finance, and their teams;
  • Attend to any ad-hoc request by Finance Managers (FMs) and the CFO;
  • Take on the technical lead in special projects undertaken by the group;
Qualifications
  • Must be a CA (SA)
Experience/Skills
  • Must have experience within the Big 4 working environment
  • Minimum of 2-5 years post article relevant experience in a IFRS technical role
  • Excels in working under strict deadlines and gets the job done
  • Attention to detail and can work accurately and efficiently
  • A passion for solving complex problems
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Strong process, governance and internal control knowledge and experience
  • Highly trustworthy as the position will require a high level of confidentiality Intermediate/advanced excel skills
Technical Competencies
  • Strong technical IFRS knowledge and knowledge of the regulations impacting listed entities in South Africa;
  • Solid communication skills (verbal and written) that can bring complex messages across in a simple and understandable manner;
  • Strong report writing (e.g., accounting position papers) and financial statement drafting skills;
  • Ability to see the big picture and prioritize accordingly;
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and regular change;
  • Ethical and high levels of personal integrity; Highly motivated;
  • Down-to-earth, non-hierarchical, and prepared to "roll up their sleeves" and make things happen;
