The In-House Legal Advisor will provide comprehensive legal support and guidance to our company operating in Sub-Saharan Africa. This role involves handling a variety of legal matters, ensuring compliance with local and international laws, and mitigating legal risks. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of the legal landscape in Sub-Saharan Africa, strong analytical skills, and the ability to provide sound legal advice to support the company's operations and strategic objectives Legal Advisory: Provide expert legal advice on a wide range of issues including commercial contracts, employment law, corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and dispute resolution. Contract Management: Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and agreements to ensure the company's interests are protected and aligned with business objectives. Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with local, regional, and international laws and regulations. Monitor and report on legal and regulatory developments affecting the company. Risk Management: Identify, assess, and manage legal risks. Develop and implement strategies to mitigate potential legal issues,especially in respect of suppliers. Dispute Resolution: Handle and oversee litigation, arbitration, and other dispute resolution processes. Liaise with external legal counsel as needed. Corporate Governance: Assist in the development and implementation of corporate policies and procedures. Provide legal support for board and committee meetings. Training and Development: Conduct training and/or develop training for employees on legal topics and company policies. Promote awareness of legal issues and best practices. Documentation and Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and up-to-date legal records, contracts, and documentation. Ensure proper filing and retrieval systems are in place Supplier Management: Oversee legal aspects of supplier relationships, including contract negotiations, dispute resolution, and ensuring compliance with supplier agreements. Manage the supplier on-boarding and verification process. External Law Firm Management: Manage letters of engagement with external law firms. Oversee the selection, engagement, and performance of external legal counsel. Ensure clear communication and effective collaboration with external law firms to achieve favourable outcomes for the company. IP Asset Management: Manage the company's IP assets such as trademarks, copyrights, patents, and brand names (registrations & renewals). Legal Research and Opinions: Conduct legal research and draft opinions to assist the company as and when requested. Labour and Disciplinary Support:Provide legal guidance on labour and employment issues, including employee contracts, workplace policies, and compliance with labour laws. Support HR in handling disciplinary actions, grievances, and investigations to ensure fair and legally compliant processes. Research and provide legal advice on labour-related issues. Chair disciplinaries as and when required. Ad Hoc Tasks: Handle various ad hoc tasks and action requests from the Head of Legal & Compliance as requested. Deal with day-to-day legal issues as they arise and as instructed. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with various departments (e.g., HR, Finance, Operations) to provide legal support and ensure alignment with the company's goals. QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor of Laws: LLB / BCom Law / BA Law or equivalent Admitted attorney of the High Court (required) Additional languages such as French and/or Portuguese beneficial Valid Passport and Driver's licence REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: 5 years post qualification experience (PQE) SSA; Experience as in-house legal counsel essential Experience with supporting global entities in SSA essential Commercial Law: Proven experience in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a wide range of commercial contracts. Regulatory Compliance: Experience ensuring compliance with local, regional, and international laws and regulations. Dispute Resolution: Hands-on experience with litigation, arbitration, and other dispute resolution processes. Labor Law: Practical experience in handling labor and employment law issues, including disciplinary actions and grievance handling. IP Management: Experience in managing intellectual property assets, including trademarks, copyrights, and patents. External Counsel Management:Experience in managing relationships with external law firms, including letters of engagement and performance oversight. R50 000 - R60 000 PM Apply Now
