Introduction The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is a renowned African-led research institute that seeks solutions to Africa’s health challenges. It is located within the University of the Witwatersrand and addresses some of the greatest public health concerns affecting our region, including HIV and its related problems, sexual and reproductive health, and vaccinology. Description Main purpose of the job: To plan, organize, direct, control, and coordinate the operations of Wits RHI Ward 21 CRS laboratory, to ensure smooth running and compliance Location: 22 Esselen Street, Hillbrow - Johannesburg Key performance areas: Manage the implementation and correct application of all WHC policies and procedures, good clinical, and laboratory practice (GCLP) principles, and laboratory quality management plan to ensure compliance Plan the activities of the team and delegate tasks to ensure performance objectives are achieved Monitor equipment calibration and maintenance to ensure accurate and reliable results Identify skills gaps within team in so far as technical outputs are required and perform training to bridge the skill gaps thereby ensuring competence Implement safe working conditions and procedures to ensure a safe working environment and compliance with all legislation Ensure that the team is familiar with and adheres to safety rules and regulations Ensure the appointment of the Laboratory Safety Officer Applying for the relevant documentation from the South African Department of Health to allow the shipment of material into and out of South Africa as required by the various studies Ensuring the preservation of the integrity of all investigational material Manage the implementation of study start-up and close-out activities Manage the correct application of quality assurance processes including laboratory audit preparations and SOPs to ensure corrective actions are taken as required Manage the review process of SOPs and implement appropriate changes to ensure the laboratory is constantly able to provide high-quality, cost-effective, and correct results Evaluate and QC the results from trials thereby ensuring accuracy and identifying trends to address skills gaps Ensure that the Laboratory is compliant with GCLP Timeously perform method validation and establishment of new assays by overseeing the process in real-time Review and approve laboratory orders per established procedures Inspect, verify, and check delivered goods and stock as per orders Oversee the management and storage of biohazardous waste and toxic materials Oversee the transport and shipping of clinical specimens Attend to all staffing requirements and administration Conduct interviews Supervise and manage the duties of subordinates to ensure optimal staff utilization and maintenance of sound labor relations Perform and facilitate performance development and assessments Identify substandard performance by team members and take necessary corrective action Coach and train subordinates and team members to ensure the acquisition of knowledge and skills required by the organization Promote harmony, teamwork, and sharing of information Reporting of results and deadlines to management and Donors Reporting of problems experienced with trials to management and sponsors Send electronic results to the Principal Investigator and Donors Give progress reports on certain assays Good communication with other laboratory users, to ensure smooth functioning of the laboratory such as incidents, stock control, logistics, etc. Take ownership and accountability for tasks & activities and demonstrate effective self-management Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained Follow through to ensure that personal quality and productivity standards are consistently and accurately maintained Maintain a positive attitude and respond openly to feedback Take ownership of driving your own career development Required minimum education and training: National Diploma in Biomedical Technology with Bachelors in Technology Required minimum work experience: Minimum 5 years experience in appropriate/relevant laboratory Professional body registration: Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities: Knowledge of and certification in Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) Sound knowledge of laboratory information systems and Microsoft Office at an intermediary level Orderly and systematic Exceptional organizational and administration skills Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines Assertive and confident Above-average attention to detail Sound interpersonal skills Self-motivated and able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team Able to make independent decisions Able to manage high volumes and flow of work Results driven Self-motivated and proactive with high regard for work ethic, values, and integrity Knowledge of clinical trials would be an advantage Demands of the job: Able to work in a pressurized environment and consistently achieve stringent turnaround times and performance targets Required to utilise all resources cost-effectively Operate in a laboratory where GCLP and general health/safety rules must be adhered to at all times Exposure to hazardous and potentially infectious samples TO APPLY: Only if you do meet the minimum job requirements and experience as mentioned above, you may submit a detailed updated CV.
