Mental Health and Stigma in the Workplace

October 10, 2017 in Education

In light of today, 10 October 2017, being #WorldMentalHealthDay, we felt that it was necessary to focus on mental health and stigma in the workplace.

New survey results looking at mental health stigma in the workplace showed that 61% of respondents had disclosed their mental illness to their manager, 69% of these respondents experienced negative or no response when they had discussed it with them. One of the participants explained: “It felt uncomfortable when sharing my mental health issues with management.”

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) Operations Director, Cassey Chambers, says: “This is one of the reasons why it’s vital to examine how Mental Health is managed in the workplace and what procedures are in place to ensure that affected employees are encouraged to and supported in seeking treatment.”
