The Department of Botany at the Nelson Mandela University is ecology. The department prides itself with close research collaboration with other departments in the Life Centre for Coastal-Palaeoscience).
The department has well-equipped teaching and research laboratories electronic microscope (HRTEM) housed in Physics department also available for research use. There are GIS for use by staff and postgraduate students. The Department also houses the Ria Oliver Herbarium.
