Plans, conducts and directs engineering research and development projects or manufacturing engineering assignments which are difficult and complex in nature, requiring the expert application of advanced engineering and knowledge of other disciplines Assess project requirements and develop a project specification with colleagues, often including those from other engineering disciplines Work closely within a mixed-discipline team to achieve the objectives and has a good understanding of other related disciplines Professionally document all work, including advanced algorithms and design calculations, plans & estimates as well as the design performance characteristics and a summarized project cost breakdown. Good knowledge of regulatory requirements and responsible for confirming compliance of designs. Develop control apparatus and equipment and develop procedures for testing products, test, evaluate, modify/enhance and re-test products, mechanical components and devices Work in a professional manner consistent with the company's commitment to excellence, and R&D's applicable development methodologies and/or standard operating procedures. Produce detailed engineering design drawings in Solidworks that fully define components to be manufactured, including part tolerances & the assembly process. Standardise all designs as far as possible, using standard components; particular consideration must be given to inventory management, manufacturability, and maintenance. A thorough understanding of appropriate materials for design, surface finishes, fits & tolerances is also required. Solve any problem in the core discipline. As subject matter expert provides technical advice and counsel to other professionals. Designs large/complex products/components/devices that can be made reliably, cost- effectively and that will perform consistently in specified operating environments within agreed timelines/budgets. Responsible for projects requiring complex judgement using high-level engineering principles and techniques Stay abreast of latest developments in core discipline, and in other engineering disciplines Good knowledge of fabrication processes and able to provide guidance to all internal and external interfacing personnel on low/medium/high volume manufacturing best practises Minimum of 8 years' work experience in a similar environment B.Eng Mechanical Engineering Degree or equivalent or B-Tech Mechanical Engineering Functional Skills Experience with the use of design tools - preferably Solidworks Basic knowledge and experience in the use of pneumatics and hydraulics. Able to use hand tools and conventional machinery to develop prototypes / jigs / test equipment. Previous mechanical design experience Hands on – happy to get hands dirty (office 60%, floor 40%) Hybrid role when projects permit Passion for design Attributes of team player, innovative, dynamic, willing to ask for help, confident but not arrogant
